Abbey Trip 10th August 2002

ABBEY RFC 10
GILFACH GOCH RFC 22

The pre-season game was arranged by John Davies (Director of Rugby at Gilfach) and Mike Lee (Secretary of Abbey RFC).

A near to full coach of players and supporters made the journey over the bridge to Abbey RFC. We arrived to a excellent reception, with Abbey supplying food for players and supporters before the game.

It was a well fought game with the Gilfach forwards on top in the scrum throughout most of the game, supplying the backs with some useful ball, which they converted into points with a well worked team try by Ryan Mogg.

The second quarter was much of the same with two more well worked tries, the first for captain Adrian Williams and the second for full-back Justin Banwell coming from a strong run by centre Nathan Walters. Abbey came back with a try of their own from their right wing.

The third quarter was a stalemate with neither side scoring any points, a result of the warm weather and lack of match fitness.

The last quarter was evenly match with a try a piece, for Gilfach Justin Banwell scoring his second and converting from the touchline, while a last minute error gave the home team a gifted try.

After the game the home side put on a excellent barbecue, with the players enjoying themselves competing against each other in drinking games.

The day was a great success and we thank them for their hospitality and wish them all the best for the coming season, and hope to see them next year on a return fixture.
