Alexandra Huci Needs a Second Chance

Yesterday morning the medical team who’s been working on Alexandra Huci’s case, the 12 year old Deva gymnast, gave a diagnosis that was hard to take –for her parents and relatives, but also for those who are not involved emotionally- “the girl is brain dead and in a 4th degree coma.” 48 hours after being hospitalized, the gymnast’s situation had not improved, in fact, since brain activity stopped in the last few hours, Alexandra will never fully recover form a neurological standpoint. All her brain functions will be affected. On Thursday doctors tried to remove some of the blood from the cerebral hemorrhage through surgical drainage. Unfortunately, the surgery did not have any effect and Alexandra was still struggling between life and death in the intensive therapy unit under the watchful eye of doctors and looks of disbelief from her parents.

Alexandra Huci was hospitalized Wednesday evening. The diagnosis at that time was brain aneurysm and 3rd degree coma. The accident was caused by a congenital malformation, as specified by the doctors who performed her CT scan. As of yesterday, she was fully dependent on life support, and the medical team who took care of her was skeptical about a possible recovery. Yesterday the ICU head nurse explained that “It’s basically impossible for her to recover. This morning, [Thursday] she was declared brain dead.” Deva high school principal, Ioan Badoi visited his student at the Timisoara hospital. “We’re all affected by this tragic accident. I asked the doctors if gymnastics could have influenced her situation twice –today and yesterday. Thy answered with a categorical No. The CT scan did not reveal any contusions from a possible hit/impact. From what Drs. Buzias, Sandescu and Ples told me, they removed some of the hemorrhage through surgical drainage in order to reduce pressure on her skull. But it’s impossible to remove all the blood. She cannot survive without life support and she cannot be moved to another hospital within the country or outside. They said only a miracle from God can save her now.”

It is worth mentioning that in an article published in ProSport Alexandra’s roommates said she complained of headaches all week long and the morning tragedy struck she had asked them not to talk so loudly. “We didn’t think she could be sick. She went through training easily; she didn’t seem to have any problems. She did a normal summersault into the pit, then she got sick.”
