Romanian team is still looking for a new doctor

Ever since the Nurofen scandal broke out during the Sydney Olympics, the Romanian team has been without a team doctor.

Răzvan Busneag, director of the Sports Medicine Institute, talked the situation at Deva. "After Mr. Oană left, we received a request to send a qualified doctor at Deva. Consequently, we sent Carmen Ionescu to Deva, who currently work as team doctor for our women's soccer team. She only satyed a month and a half, being recalled on grounds that the Deva staff thought she is too old. We tried to find someone else. The second doctor we sent there, Delia Stemata, was also recalled, this time because she was deemed too young. After reciveing yet another request for a team doctor, I talked about the opening during the National Sports Medicine Conference, but nobody wanted to go [to Deva]. As far as I know, Dr. Cornelia Cernelea helps out the National team and treats the girls in emergency situations."

RGF President Nicolae Vieru explained finding a new team doctor is not the federation's responsibility.” The specialized institute should take care of this. We just have to compensate the doctor for missed work, and pay for his/her food, housing and a daily allowance whenever they travel abroad with the team, and also include the doctor on our prize money list as the case might be. Even though Mrs. Turcu has been taking care of the gymnasts for a long time, and she is a remarkable nurse, we'll probably ask the men's team doctor to help out during Worlds," he concluded.
