Error #3

Behavioral error:

Mistaking letters for other letters on a chart at the eye doctor's office.

When/where:

1/3/04, Lenscrafters in Orland

Why this is an error:

The letters were not the ones I thought they were.

Processes:

Perception
I am extremely nearsighted, thus, without contact lenses or glasses I am unable to clearly see more than a foot from my face. Letters on an eye chart are indistinguishable blurs because the focus of light from them falls short of my retinas.

Memory
As the testing progressed, and the doctor tried different lenses that improved my vision, I was able to recite letters even though I could nto see them, because they were stored in my working memory and continually rehearsed. Because of the constant rehearsal, I could not forget the letters. Normally this would be good, but in the current situation, it was detrimental to achieving the purpose of the visit.
