Traveling Ginny's Diary
Vesuvius, Virginia
April 16, 2001

Wow! I arrived here at 7:00 a.m. Monday morning on the mail truck. We came over the mountain to Vesuvius (what a tongue-twister!) and there were lights all along the road to light our way. The truck driver made sure I had a safe place to ride in his truck.
Margaret Ann Whittington was waiting at the Post Office and recognized my traveling box immediately! C. T. Cash, the rural mail carrier, also was expecting me, and he helped me out of the traveling box. Here's a picture of me with C. T.
Love, TGinny
p.s. Even after travelin' all the way from Arizona, my cowgirl duds weren't even wrinkled!
p.p.s. It's cold here-B-r-r-r! They're callin' for snow tonight.

Cousins Farm Ginny and Vivacious Ginny were at the Post Office, too, to greet me. Do you think we look alike? Farm Ginny says I won't need my shades today, but I think I look really cool in them. There's a huge bucket of lollypops right behind me......
|
Margaret Ann, my two cousins, and I all crowded into her VW and we drove into Staunton, where she works at a law firm as the Administrator (another tongue-twister!). Nobody there seems to know just what she does all day, but she says she is always busy. This is a picture of us in the reception area. Vivacious Ginny said her sweater was knitted by Farm Kat, and Farm Ginny's sweater and romper were made by Margaret Ann's sister-in-law Mary Lee Yates. All of us are so lucky to have friends to make our clothes-we're the best-dressed girls anywhere!

Good thing the cousins brought me some of their farm clothes to wear, 'cause we went off to the archives to find an old file. With three of us looking, it didn't take long to find it. |
After work, we stopped at the Colonel's and picked up a bucket of chicken. We wanted to eat the biscuits right then!, but had to wait..... They were having a Pot Luck supper at the Community Building and I was the guest of honor. Here we are getting food ready on the buffet table. |
After supper, we had fun playing the organ, which had been donated to the Community Building by Margaret Ann's sister-in-law, Mary Lee Yates. It sounded heavenly to us, but I think most of the folks were glad when we stopped! Margaret Ann showed us how much fun we could have-the organ can sound like lots of different instruments, it even has drums! The grownups use it when they have Sing-a-longs. Margaret Ann says the Methodist Church will have a "Hymn Sing" there at the end of the month to raise funds for renovation of the building. |

Margaret Ann's neighbor, Jane Comstock, held us up to see the famous O. Winston Link photograph of the Vesuvius crossing. It was taken nearly 50 years ago-as old as gran-Ginny. This picture is known all over the world, so Vesuvius is not just a sleepy little village in the mountains after all! |
Well, Diary, we finally got to Peace and Plenty Farm in the middle of the night. Boy, was I tired! We put on our nighties right away 'cause it was way past our bedtime. But I was surprised to find that cousins Shirley and Ginny Shirley had a surprise for me (boy, do they look like their Arizona cousins!). |
The Easter Bunny left me a basket with colored eggs, and bunnies! I had to play with them for just a few minutes..... Ginny Chris (she has blond braids), and California Ginny wanted to play, but Miss Ginger said it was really time for bed. She said we could talk about my adventures tomorrow. |
