BRITT SURNAME PROJECT

Family historians have been researching the Britt surname for a cumulative total of over 150 years!  The earliest common ancestor we’ve been able to find is Hugh Britt, Sr. (1765-1836).  Family legend says Hugh came to this country from Ireland with two brothers, who each went to different parts of the South.  No one has been able to substantiate any history earlier than Hugh.  We don’t know if we’re distant cousins of other US Britts and don’t know if we share some of the same history.

In my opinion, we’ve gone just about as far as we can with the information we have.  Fortunately, there’s a new tool that will be able to do what years of research haven’t.  Family Tree DNA is a company that does DNA testing strictly for genealogical purposes.   All we need to get started are six Britt males to get started.  The DNA is passed from father to son, so female offspring aren’t able to participate.  There’s no limit to the number of direct male Britt participants, however.

I’ve volunteered to be the Group Administrator for this project because I want to solve this mystery in my lifetime.  My Uncle is a participant in another surname project and the results have been so exciting!  We’ve learned that our family line originated in this country in Virginia.  Without the test, we may never have searched there!

Please contact me for additional information.  I certainly am not a DNA expert, but I understand that the results speak for themselves.  Please encourage any male Britts to contact me for information in joining the project.
