BRITT SURNAME DNA PROJECT | ||||
Family historians have been researching the Britt surname for a cumulative total of over 150 years! We've gone to distant courthouses, dug through musty books, scanned pages of census documents...but we haven't really made any significant progress. My earliest Britt ancestor was Hugh Britt, Sr. (1765-1836). Family legend says Hugh came from Ireland to South Carolina, perhaps with two brothers who went elsewhere. We don't know if all the USA Britts share a common ancestor, or even if they came from the same country. We've gone just about as far as we can with the clues we have. Fortunately, there's a great new tool that will be able to do what years of research have failed to do. Family Tree DNA is a company doing testing strictly for DNA purposes. They'll even store the sample, free of charge, until such time as scientific progress enables further testing! All we need to get started are six Britt males. The Y chromosome from which this DNA is extracted is passed from father to son, so females can't participate in this particular test. There's no limit to the number of males in the project, so let's get going! I've volunteered to be the Group Administrator for the Britt Surname Project because I want to solve this mystery in my lifetime. My Uncle is involved with another surname project and the results have been quite exciting. I know we can expect to learn more than we ever could on a costly genealogy trip, which may or may not yield productive results. Please contact me for additional information.
