![]() Kitchen (#4216) A large room, kept warm by the many large hearths that are kept going at various times of the day, the kitchen is often a cheerful place, full of boisterous gossip and bustling drudges. At least one of the hearths that lines the western wall is always kept hot with klah and stew, kept hot at all hours for visitors. Above the line of hearths are the ovens, warmed by the heat below. On the opposite wall is a long, dopped counter containing a pair of deep sinks and a pair of shallow ones. The rest of the countertops are left clear for the preparation of the next meal, as are the heavy, sturdy tables which are set within the room, often filled with greens to be cleaned and other goodies in different stages of preparation. Shelves and cabinets take up the rest of the wall space, filled with all sorts of pots and pans, dishes and utensils. To the north, you see one person. On the perch is Malice. Obvious exits: Inner courtyard Tavern Corridor Dining Hall Roza limps, leaning on her cane, in from the Inner Courtyard. Dorendel trudges in after his kitchenmate, glowering at the back of his head with those incongrouusly effeminate and /pretty/ violet blue eyes. "Xyyyy, Why'd you have to drag me along? I bet it's because I've been working out and you need me to lug things for you. Lovely." Roza hobbles in yawning, doing the bidding of her master, very early in the morning. "Uhm... hello." She gives a weak smile, faltering on her lips, "I didn't expect anyone to be here... Do you want me to leave?" Roza looks at the other three, ready to run and hide. Sola walks into the Kitchen, a slight sigh on her face as she sees several drudges scurrying away. No one liked to cook lunch...hmph. Seeing some new faces, she brightens, only slightly recognizing a few of them. Maybe she could sucker them into helping. "Oh...uh...excuse me!" Wave. Big wave. "Nonono, stay!" Is Sola's plea, "You're all welcome to stay...lunch is about to be cooked?" Hpe glance is given to each. "Well I had the big basket to carry..." Xyon replies to Dorendel, managing to smile though, "and well Camma wanted the stuff to be delivered and well..." he trails off realising there's people in here. "Oh sorry... was just popping in for a snack... lunch?" his eyes light up at that, "oooh that sounds good. Can we help?" We of course being him and Dor. Dorendel perks up. "Work? Coool! What can I help with?" Bangs are pushed away from ees and buttons keeping his black shirt above his elbows checked, rechecked, and a apron snagged from a 'helpful' drudge by use of his deep voice and drudge-bossing skills. "Ready. What can I do?" Roza wrinkles her nose and walks, unsteadily farther into the kitchen. "O - o - okay. I guess I'll help." she looks at everyone and just shivers. Why does she do these type of errands? "What do you want me to do?" Roz asks looking at Sola, the question a whisper on her lips. Sola smiles warmly. Two down, and one to go. A glance is given to her favorite, and most trustworthy drudge, "Go get Aleric please, and tell Ray if she wants to come she can." The drudge, Canle, scurries off, soon returning with the small boy, "Ray's not in her room ma'am...prolly off playing dragons." An affectionate pat is given to Aleric as she sets him in the pen. Ooo, Roza agreed, too. "I'm Sola..." she offers just to refresh memories, and then she hobbles towards the kitchen. She's always pregnant. "Wash up, please, and tie any hair back." Just routine saying of course. Xyon's hair is already snagged firmly back off his face, but he loosens the cord and ties it all back tightly, "hmm I think I might cut my hair," he decides as he walks over to the sink, dousing his hands in water, scrubbing with sweetsand till his hands are immaculate. "So what's for lunch anyway?" Dorendel raises his eyebrows dramatically under his bangs, doing the same re-tighten on his hair as he walks to the sink and scrubs his already perfectly clean hands again. "Not cutting mine. Mmmf. What's for dessert?" Hope springs eternal. And no, he dosen't want to eat it. He wants to make it. Roza bobs her head and ties back her dark ebony hair with a thin strip of leather. "Alright... I'm ready." She smiles again, trying to seem unafraid. But she'd rather just get the spices and leave. Sigh. "What can I do Sola?" Roz peeks around the room, looking for some hints of a lunch. Sola smiles and hmms, giving Xy a look, "Awww...like a short crop? Or just shorter?" Always one to talk, she then ohhs, "I'm thinking Bean and Cheese Chips...but I want to try herdbeast on them today (Beef Nachos). Oh and dessert, as well...of course. But I haven't decided on what for that yet." Sola just beams at Roza, loving the readiness. "Oh...umm...will you run down to the cellar and grab two blacks of cheese." She makes a motion to show the correct size, then points at Dor, "Oh and grab some white roots, garlic, and peppers. Just bring one heaping cup of each, and there's a basket you can carry them in that's already in the cellar." She turns to Xy, "Come here, and I'll show you how to slice the herdbeast into chunks, like this." She demonstrates, each piece more or less torn rather than cut. After Sola shows Xy, she leaves, then returns with a basket of of yellowed, crispy, flour chips, setting the on the counter. Dorendel nods in businesslike fashion, though wrinkles his nose at the peppers. He descends into the cellar, stays there for a minute or two, and returns with the prescribed cup of each whiteroot, garlis and *shudder* peppers. "Here." "Shorter so it isn't in my way, or maybe I'll get it all chopped off, that way it'll be more practical and hygenic," Xyon decides in reply to Sola, "hmmm that sounds nice, do we get to eat some?" he asks hopefully, "once we're finished." He wanders over and watches the size she wants the herdbeast cut to bits and follows suit. Roza gives a quick nod and goes down to the cellar only to reappear moments later with the cheese. "Got it." she says to the air, placing them down on a cutting board that sits on an empty countertop. "What can I do with the cheese? Anything in particular or should I uhm... let it sit?" she looks at the group, hoping for an answer. Any answer would be good for silly Roza. Dorendel returns in time to hear Xy's horrible plan for hair shortening. "Ack! But if you cut it short, you can't tie it back, and it'll get in your eyes." As if it weren't before... Just look at Dor's bangs! Sola shrugs and then looks towards Xy and Dor, "A lot of the Keroon boys have more or less shaved it off...leaving it kind messy on top..." She tries to show what she means, moving her hands closely to her head, then at the top flaring her fingers to show spikiness. "It looks nice...for boys, though." She then gets back to work, "Dor, slice the whiteroots into really, tiny shavings, then then then garlic even tinier. More like...oh, just get a bowl and crush the garlic into a powder. Then Xy, after you're done with the meat, you can slice the peppers really small as well." She had noticed the aversion to peppers and smiled, "And you can eat some, of course..." Then to Roza, "Get the grater and grate both blocks completely. That might take a while, so that's you're only taks now." Sola then grabs to tryas for herself, placing the flour chips all over the two trays, then gets out more trays, doing the same. "If I cut it all off there wont be any hair to fall in my eyes," Xyon replies practically as he continues the task in hand, tearing the meat like Sola showed him. Attention diverted momentarly to see what the others are doing and getting. Once meat is chopped he goes over to the sink and scrubs his hands clean again, leaving meat and knife on the board he goes over to a new one, acquiring another knife and starts to finely slice the peppers. Dorendel grins, nodding. "But then it's short, and what's the fun in that? I like my hiar. And Roza, keep your fingers back when you get to the last bit so you don't add a little knuckle in as well." He then gets a knife, and a cutting board, splitting the whiteroot in half, then into slivers. After those are done, he absconds a mortar and pestle and goes to work on the garlic after peeling the skin off. "How many cloves we need for this recipice?" "Hair is not meant to be fun," Xyon declares, "it's just meant to be there. I might get it cropped like that cut... um..." Sola's name not known or remembered he scrambles around to think for a moment continuing to chop, keeping his fingers well away from his face, remembering past accidents with hot peppers. Roza wrinkles her nose, sparing a glance to Xyon and Dorendel before going over to the grater, somewhat haphazardly and coming back to the cheese. "Okay. I can do that." she starts to grate away on the first block, little progress shown because of the huge block she's dealing with. "Hair is nice. I like hair." she smiles, grinning because of her own. To think her mother was a blonde. "Hair is good." Sola nods at Xy, "We only need about 1/4 a cup of peppers, and we need half a cup of whiteroots, and 2 cloves, please." Turning towards Roza, she smiles and nods at her work. She's doing fine. She finishes her own task, filling 5 trays with the chips. "Sola." She states. Some boys. She smiles and rolls her eyes slightly. Sola then turns to Roza, "I like hair, too...they told me I should cut it with all the kids I'm going to have...but..." She runs her hand on the bond hair, "I just can't..." Dorendel feels very similarly about his hair. "They told me to cut mine when I was a kitchen drtudge, but I wouldn't let them, and they pinned me down and cut it anyway. I'm never going to cut it again." He peers at his clover-paste. "I'm done, Sola." Xyon's eyes water at his close proximity to Dorendel and the white-roots, he slowly pads over to the sink once he has enough peppers chopped and again douses his hands, making sure all the nasty peppery stuff is off them before walking back. "Hair is hair," he decides. "And well we're making food which is more important than hair." And Xyon of course would much rather talk about food. Dorendel, of course, would not. "But you eat food, which is all well and good, but hair people have to look at all the time. Unless you're you, I guess. And food should look good too." Roza nearly finishes on the first block of cheese, little stray flakes of cheese sitting on her hands in globs. "Well, I'm rather fond of my hair. It's much easier to not cut it than to cut it. Cutting takes a lot of time." She nods, finishing the first block, careful not to get her fingers in the grater and starts on the second, "Why would anyone want to cut their hair? It's nice to have hair." Sola nods at Dor, then points at the already grated cheese. "As she grates the cheese, scoop it into a bowl, then bring it over her and sprinkle it over the fried flour chips, ok?" She demonstrates, a thick layer of cheese on a certain spot of chips. Sola /likes/ cheese. "Oh, and bring the garlic and whiteroots to me, just dump them in that bowl and I'll mix it." She grins at Xy's words, then ohhs, "And bring the peppers to me...I'm making two trays without pepper, so I don't want to mix them with the whiteroots and garlic. She then points to Xy, "Go add some more wood...about 2 logs, to the fire in the big oven please...we want it nice and hot." She smiles at Roza, "Good job, dear..." She then nods an agreement, "I do like hair...hair that looks good on boys, too." A small smile spreads on her face, obviously thinking of someone. Dorendel smiles faintly. "I agree." And he's not talkign about himself, either. But anyway... He follows the directions, making two bowls, one with cheese, which is sprinkled onver the chips with long, artistic fingers, and one with onion and garlic, which waits on a table for Sola. "Do we cook the meat first?" Xyon asks, "or does it all get cooked inside the chip things?" he carries the things over to Sola, and then fetches the wood, a good biddable young man. "And hair gets in the way. Hair well... it falls in food if people aren't careful. No hair, no mess, and Ista's hot enough you don't need hair to keep you hot." Sola shrugs, "Keroon's not..." She then ohhs, "I nealy forgot about the meat...but it's alright, now's a good time to cook it." She points to a skillet, "Put the pieces in there Xy, and put some butter-just a bit-in the skillet first and cook em a bit. Make sure they're evenly cooked, though." She then turns towards the bowl and mixes it with her hand, going back over where the cheese was spread and lightly sprinkling the seasonings. She then trots over to where Xy is (will be) and adds a few onions and peppers into the mix. "Cook those with, just for some flavour. And when it's done, let the meat cool, and then use a fork or something to put the lil pieces over the trays-over the cheese and everything else." Roza finishes the last of the cheese, putting the grater into a tub of water to soak. "Okay. That's it." She looks to Sola for directions, "Anything I can do now?" She smiles, a tiny bit braver than before, "I can do anything something else." She bobs her head, almost as if she's reassuring herself. "Yah. I can do other stuff." Dorendel stands out of the way, looking bored. "Sola, what's for dessert?" Xyon trots off and gets the butter and puts it in the skillet and on the heat, then wanders off to fetch the meat too and dumps it in on top of the butter. He takes a wooden spoon to stir the meat around with and stop it sticking to the bottom, "how long will it take to cook?" he asks as the meat browns. Sola noticing Dor's look, she points him to the cellar, "Get some flour...just about 3 cups...no 4. And some white sugar and brown sugar." A look is given to the helpful Roza, "Oh thanks, you help him...2 a cup of the white, and 1 of the brown. Oh and get 4 eggs." Mnetally doubling a recipe was more than enough work for her, and get the bottle of vanilla, please." She then nods at Xy, "Brown the meat, the press on it to make sure none of the blood still seeps out." Oh lovely...just so appetizing, too. She finishes spreading the cheese herself, along with the spices. Two of the trays she leaves without pepper, "We're making cookies...and...I dunno...they're just really simple." She then adds, "The reason you cook the meat first is that it only takes a bit for the cheese to melt, and it wouldn't be cooked by then." Dorendel looks vaguely dissapointed at the pronounciation of cookies as the dessert of the day, and, shrugging, takes a measuring cup and trudges down to the cellar, returning to the kitchen with the four cups of flour ordered. Xyon's stomach rumbles at the smell of cooking food as he does what he's asked whilst trying to cheep track of what the others are being made to do. He nods at her words, having already figured out that bit and does more stirring. When there's no more blood leaking and it all looks dark all over he smiles, "I think it's done. Take it off the heat and leave it to cool did you say?" Roza follows behind Dorendel, trying to remember what to get. Something about brown sugar, and white and eggs, vanilla too? Hopefully she'll remember. "Okay..." trailing in his wake, she goes down to the cellar, popping back up with all the ingredients in tiny bags, cups and bottles. "I've got it all. I think." She places the cups with the two types of sugar down and the bag of eggs. In the bottle is the vanilla, oozy and brown. "Okay. I think that's it. Right?" Sola rolls her eyes at Dor's look of disappointment. He can come back for the big dessert at dinner time, then. "Yes, but not completely cool...just so you don't kill yourself trying to pick it. Then spread it evenly all over the cheese." She then directs the two from the cellar over the the other counter. "We'll do the cookies there." She grabs a bit of butter, melting over the stove a moment, the measures out a cup of it, explaining as she does so, mixing it into a bowl and asking for the half of the flour, sugars and two of the eggs to be mixed in there. "Dor, you do that." She turns to Roza, "You can measure to teaspoons of vanilla, please, mix it in there as well. Then place the left overs of the ingradients over on this counter please." Sola, meanwhile, gets out four trays. Dorendel nods briskly, putting flour and sugar in another bowl, adding the two eggs slowly to the butter, then the butter/egg to the flour/sugar, mixing it 'til even, after waiting for Roza to add the vanilla. Roza carefully measures out the vanilla in a spoon and pours it in carefully to avoid spilling. Spilling would be a horrible thing. She corks the bottle back up and trots over to the other counter, placing it down carefully with the label 'Vanilla' showing to the front. "I wish vanilla tasted as good as it smelt." Xyon leaves the pot where it is and gathers up all the mess they made with the chopping, moving boards and knives and all to the sink, dumping everything that wasn't used in before returning to the now cooler meat and doing exactly as he was asked, whilst trying to keep an eye on them and their cooking and what they're doing. "Vanilla does taste nice," he comments, "especially in custard." Dorendel grins. "It does. Just in little bits." He then stirs a little more, making it smooth. Roza shakes her head, "I mean by itself. Have you ever taken a spoonful of vanilla straight? It tastes /horrible/." She grumbles, glaring down the bottle as she goes over to help clean up a bit. "It tastes like something blah." Quickly she checks her voice level and goes back to a whisper, "It doesn't taste good." "That's because they do stuff to it, vanilla pods taste nice though," Xyon says cheerfully, "but it's much better if it's only a little bit. It's flavouring, not a food on it's own." Sola moves and asks, "Will you three help me carry these trays over, please?" She takes two trays herself, opening the oven door with a well-practice foot. Setting in two, she quickly backs away from the heat, waiting on the others to do so before closing the door. "Ok, now...let's see. Will you smooth the rest of this butter (melted) onto the trays, please...but not too thickly." Then to Dor, "Mix in the rest of the ingredients, now, it's easier to a bit at a time." She then hmms at Xy..." Uh...get two spoons I guess... We'll let the Cheese and Meat chips cook for just a few moments." Dorendel nods, and smiles, adding the rest and stirring carefully. "Is there any sour cream in the cool-box to put on those chips? That might be good..." Roz rolls her eyes, sighing. Like she didn't /know/ that. "Right," she says, still cheerily to Sola, bringing over a tray herself and putting it in, before going back to the counter to rub the butter onto the pan with a tiny cloth. "Hm... what type of cookies? Any specific type or just plain sugar cookies?" Sola grins at Roza's look, then adds her own opinion about vanilla, "I don't like it by itself...I think that's what she meant." Then, she ohhs, "They're just plain...but all you have to do is drop them on there." She grins and winks, "Really easy, and nice after a heavy (as in gresy) meal. The cheese always does that." She shrugs and then smiles, pointing to Dor and Roza, "Take the spoons Xy has, and scoop out the batter with the spoon, and drop the onto the tray. Each tray should get at least 24 or so...Xy, help me get out the chips, ok?" She tosses him two mittens, placing her own on, and after opening the oven, carries two trays over to the counter, then returns for a thrid one. She smiles, "See, it only takes a bit for the cheese to melt...they're all ready now, so once we get the cookies in the oven, we can eat these." She smiles proudly, then ohhs, "Oh that sounds pretty good...we'll put some sour cream on one of the trays and see how everyone likes it." She scurries off to fetch a bit of it. Dorendel takes one of the spoons away from Xy, and begins methodically dolloping bits of dought every two inches. Soon, he has his half of the dough done. "There." He looks pleased with himself. Xyon misses the mittens and has to grab them off the floor, looking slightly embarassed as he does as she says, carrying the trays to where he's told to. "So we can eat them now?" he asks before she states that they have to wait till the cookies are put in the oven, practically drooling over the smell of the food. Roza grabs the other spoon, carefully scooping the cookie dough out, placing them onto the tray and slightly patting them down into perfect little half globes. Taking more time than Dor, she's only a half a tray done, but continues to work away, spending the extra seconds on making them as pretty as possible. Sola smiles, and nods as the trays are almost completely full of cookies. She then points to plates, "You guys go ahead and help yourselves, I'll finish putting the cookies in the oven." She takes two trays that're already full, placing them in, and returning for the other two trays. She smiles at Roza, "Thanks dear." She then grabs herself her own plate, taking some plain, some with the peppers, and then one with a glob os sour cream. Dorendel pads over, gettins some without pepper, and some with sour cream. He sits, and tries eating neatly. Which he acomplishes, but it's a slow process. "These are messy." He notes. Sola nods, taking a few bites and liking each-but the ones with peppers the best. "What do you guys think?" She grins, and get a plain one with a tiny bit of sour cream, handing it to Canel to give to Aleric, "Gte some, too, ok Canle?" She drudge nods after laughing at the messy child. Xyon's eyes light up brightly and he grabs some food and munches upon it, half spilling over his clothes, fingers getting messy. "MMmmm," he mumbles appreciatively as he chomps upon things. "Is good." Dorendel just /looks/ at Xyon, shaking his head sadly. "They're cood. But there's to much pepper in the meat." Roza looks over at them and carefully takes a chip, biting into it. "It's good!" she grins, munching away. Of course all her cookie duties are finished, so she munches away happily on a chip, without the peppers on top - of course. Xyon munches upon the food, devouring it with great appreciation, deciding it better not to speak whilst he's spilling stuff all over himself. Dorendel pauses, just staring at his kitchenmate with open awe. "I don't know how he does that. I really don't." Roza raises an eyebrow, stealing another chip and munching away again, "Sola? What else do we have to do?" Looking greedily over the pile of chips she grins. She could eat 'em all. Yup. "Cause I'm starving and I'd /love/ to eat lunch." Sola grins at Roza, "Oh nothing...really." She shrugs, "Eat as much as you like...not many people 'round the Hold today anyway." She explains, "There was big hunting party going out, and most of the kiddies went along..I bet that's where Ray is..." she mentions to Canle. Xyon just eats all too happily as if he's been starving for the past sevenday, munch, crunch, munch, crunch, before finally he looks around for something to wash the heat away with, "um is there anything to drink?" more food eaten in the meantime. Dorendel sighs, hiding his face in hgsi hands dramatically, having finished his spartan protion earlier. "Why me?" Sola points to the pitchers. Klah, cider, and Redfruit juice that's availbale. "Help yourself." She then moves, motioning Canle to help her, and soon has the cookies out, sprinkling sugar on top. "Once those cool a bit, help yourself to those, as well. Xyon likes eating, it's not his fault he usually ends up wearing half of it, he wanders over to the juice, licking messy fingers clean and pours himself a glass before wandering back sipping and going to munch upon more of the food. Savouries first then sweets. "Thankyou," he says to Sola, "this is really nice. I bet the cookies are good too," he manages to get out between munching.
