Since those days, the diversity of the types of cats available now is much greater. Selective breeding has helped this process along also. Pictured here are a few of the differing types of cats that you can acquire now if you are looking for a new friend in your home. Please be patient and wait for the images to load.
This
is an angora. The coat is fine and soft. The original blue eyed white cat.
This
is an abyssinian brown, or usual. There are a variety of colours to choose
from. The coat is ticked and it is desirable to have as little tabby marking
on the legs and tummy as possible. Also not much white on the chin, neck
area is desirable. Abyssinians are beautifully natured cats and make great
pets. The longhaired version is called a Somali.
This is a red abyssinian.
The
Sacred Cat of Burma or Birman has four white feet. This is an old breed
and they were said to guard the temples in Burma. Again, a nice temperament.
The
British Blue has a very stocky body and a thick coat.
The
Burmese is a shorthaired variety in several colours. This is a brown or
sable one. They are extremely active and have a heavy stocky body. Personality
plus!
The
Cornish Rex is a mutation that emerged in Cornwal, United Kingdom, hence
the name. The coat is curly, like a poodle. They are said to be good for
people who suffer from cat allergies, but I personally haven't tested the
theory. A nice cat for a person who wants a constant companion. There is
another variety, the Devon Rex, which differs slightly.
This is the Havana Brown, a shorthaired variety.
This
cute little guy is a Himalayan or Colourpoint (blue variety). He will grow
up to look like this. A longhaired breed which needs grooming constantly
to prevent matting of fur.
Adult Himalayan. They are all the point colours of the siamese.
Persian cats come in a huge range of colours. The one pictured above is
a white and they are available in blue eyed, orange eyed and odd eyed (one
of each). Persians have thick lush coats and need to be groomed to prevent
knots forming in the fur. Some can be a little temperamental, just like
people, so you need to look at the parents' personalities before choosing
a kitten for yourself.
The
Ragdoll is so named because it is floppy, just like a ragdoll. People who
have them tend to be obsessed quickly and swear that they are the only
cat to have :) They come in a variety of colours.
tThis
is a Scottish Fold, so named because of the folded down ears. They can
however, come with the usual ears, but carrying the gene for the fold so
it will appear in some of the kittens produced.
This is a Siamese. The one pictured is of the older variety, a sealpoint,
with a round face and sometimes, cross-eyed, although it was considered
a fault. Breeders have refined the Siamese Variety so much that it is hardly
recognisable today. Below is a pic of the new variety with the wide bat
ears and sleek body. They almost look underfed. Siamese have a raucous
voice and are very demanding upon their owners time. If you are attracted
to the siamese, be sure that you have the time to give to it. It is almost
like having another child in the home. A very active cat and a fierce hunter.
Personalities are varied to the most placid, to the most vicious, depending
on their upbringing, the same as people. Personality Plus!
New
Variety Siamese. This is a bluepoint..
Tabby
cats come in a few colours, usually, silver, brown, or red. The markings
of the tabby must be a definite pattern. This is a beautiful silver tabby.
Persians come in the tabby colours too.
I hope you have found what you are looking for here, but these are not all of the varieties available, just the ones I could find pictures for :) Once you have been owned by a cat, you are addicted. There is no escape. They are great playmates and companions. They seem to talk to you once a bond is formed between you. They are purr-fectly amazing!
I would like to put some links on this page to catteries breeding the varieties pictured so if you would like to email me with your homepage address, I would be grateful.
