1.The Modern Olympics started when Baron Pierre de Coubertin had an idea that people from different countries could compete and promote world friendliness.
2.The first Modern Olympics were held in 1896 in Athens.
3.The Athens games started on the 5th of April.
4.Athens was opened by King George of Greece in front of a crowd of 60,000 people.
5.The first competition of the Modern Games was the 100m. It was won by Francis Lane with a time of 12.5 seconds.
6.James Connoly was the first winner when he won the triple jump with a jump of 13.71metres.
7.Australias first Olympian and winner was Edwin Flack who won the 800m and 1500m track.
8.Edwin Also competed in the marathon but didnt finish due to fatige.
9.Flack was also in the singles and doubles tennis but lost in the first round.
10.The origanal medals were silver and the winner of the event was the only one to get them.
