Beatty had a pretty good arguement as to why he doesn't like books.  He thinks that by burning books and people's personal belongings, that they have worked hard for all of their lives, he is making them content and happy.  You can see that people listen to and are scared of Beatty.  For instance, when he went to Montag's house Mildred was griping about Montag telling her to turn "The Families" off.  But Beatty came over and told her to turn them off and she immediately did so.  You can see that people in this society, people choose power over love.  Beatty describes his job as doing a favor for society.  Out of all the firemen Beatty is picking Montag to, in the future, take over his job.  But in all reality, Montag doesn't want his job.  The other firemen are not important at this point.
