Politics & Religion

Election 2004

For the past few days, I've been in a funk.
On Monday I was a cog in the Democratic Wheel of Progressive thinking.
On Wednesday, I was a miscreant, an immoral Social Outcast, a radical.

How did I go from being an active, accepted witch of the Democratic Process, a Citizen of the United States of America, to this radical, immoral, miscreant, unworthy of the respect of my Peers?

I woke up on Wednesday morning and read the Media, watched the Media and listened to the Media.

My Political beliefs are considered Liberal, even though I believe the US Constitution should be held Sacrosanct, especially the 1st Amendment. It's the very FIRST one because it is the most important to the Democratic way of life. A Democracy thrives on Freedom, and the First Amendment of the United States Constitution makes Freedom a priority.

Now how exactly does that philosophy make me a radical Liberal?

Media says that the Presidential Election came down to Moral issues. 51% of the voting public voted on purely Moral issues. One of the articles I read this week said the election came down to 3 categories: God, Guns and Gays. Of the three, I can only see one, which has it's very own Amendment in the US Constitution as being a valid Political Issue, Guns. The other two have absolutely no place in the business of Government.

What exactly is God doing in the Government? Sure He is on our money, we have a Pledge invoking His name. God has joined Man and He in generic usage. Women are told to "understand" that the use of Man in printed material should be understood by the reader to be Mankind, equivalent to the collective You in English Grammar. US Citizenry are to "understand" that God refers to All Gods, the Collective God, if you will. Ok, fine by me. It is a very nice compromise.

But other than In God We Trust and One Nation Under God, what exactly is He doing in our Government Business?

In terms of the Election, Media determined that the God category of Moral Issues included the Abortion Topic. Nearly 51% of Americans want to legislate, regulate and police the medical practice of Abortion. Ok, but what about the Economic Impact? What about the impact on population? What about the impact on marriage?

Regulation of Abortion would have dramatic effects on American Women. In the home, in the work force, in the economy. If Abortion is regulated, or more specifically the overturning of RoevWade, there must be a compensatory Amendment for Women's Rights, or Equal Rights, protecting both the Economy of the US as well as the income and welfare of Women.

Why not let the US Government do what it does best, and simply tax the procedure? Problem solved. Economic catastrophes are avoided, the population does not explode anymore, and people get married for love.

The other issue is Gays, as in Gay Marriage. Why does the Government care? The Marriage License is simply a Marriage Tax; otherwise you wouldn't need a License. It's a formal Record declaring your Tax Status, Married versus Single. If you commingle your income you naturally have more income, therefore the Government gets to tax it at a higher rate.

What does money have to do with gender? If anyone cares at all about gender, it would be God. The Government only wants to know who is where and how to tax their income.

What is the typical process in getting married? First you get the license then you get the priest. Sure there are some who get married at City Hall, but no church or synagogue or mosque would recognize the union. Likewise, unless you get that license, the Government doesn't recognize the union. So now Government is siding with the Religion? But that violates the First Amendment.

Is it possible that 51% of American voters want to do away with the First Amendment? I don't want to believe this, but as the days roll on and Media keeps chattering about Moral Issues and Radical Liberals, I begin to wonder... maybe it is true.

The idea the 51% of my Peers feel that the First Amendment should be violated or done away with entirely is what has put me in a funk. This is the type of society my German Grandparents and my Irish Grandparents ran way from... escaped from is more accurate. Some risked their lives in their attempt to get into America.

So now I am a Radical Liberal. The beauty of it is that I have the right to vote, to be a Citizen, to be a part of the process. And the First Amendment allows me to voice my opinion. Over the next four years, I will take comfort in the fact that I still have that right.
