The Rescue - Page 5

Cha Cha Chihuahua deftly lept onto the couch and peered out the sliding glass door. It was a crisp day in Pennsylvania, a little warmer than normal, which was fine with her. Snow was bad news. It always chilled her to the bone, and made her paws wet and cold too. Mommy would always insist on forcing her into one of those heinous jacket creations... she shuddered at the thought. The sound of nails scratching on the cushion behind her broke into her thoughts.

"Cha, help me up," whined her baby sister Roxie as she bounced up and down with her usual impatient Min Pin energy bursts.

"Shut up, Roxie, Mommy is out of sight, we don't have much time. We've got to get everything in the car and get on our way if we are going to pick up Yodah in time and get to Joplin."

As an afterthought, she added,

"And if you don't quit that whining I will leave you home. You better not embarrass me in front of my Chihuahua friends because I want to be part of the gang. If you make us look like babies I swear, you will never see Mommy again... I'll leave you there, I mean it" she growled at the end of her last statement to prove the seriousness of the matter, and even showed some teeth.

She jumped onto the cushion and to the floor in one swift, graceful move. Cha logged into her email account one last time. There was a message from the Southern Gang. They were on the move!! Cha had to get going and fast!

As she trotted into the kitchen she yelled back to her sister "Gather your things, little one, we're outta here!"

She nosed open the cabinet and pulled the small baggy of food out, since God only knew when they would be able to eat, or how. She pulled the little water bottle to the door with her teeth. Cha was a master at opening bottle caps. Just clamp your teeth down and twist! It was only a little water, but it would tide them over. Besides, Roxie really was just a baby, being only 12 weeks, and she actually had a soft spot for her younger sibling, though she would be the last to ever admit it. She wanted to take care of her as best she could; the kid actually had some spunk to her and once she grew out of the baby talk stage, she just might make it in the Gangsta world.

So the two little dogs set out on their voyage, in a big blue Corvette. Cha Cha had the top down, because they couldn’t hang out the window and manage the manual six speed transmission, and she needed Roxie's help with the clutch so she could shift. Both pups enjoyed the fresh air, despite having so much work to do! The car could basically drive itself, being of the realm of "Batman" as Mommy would say. But shifting, that was a little difficult for a Chihuahua to handle alone, for Cha Cha's legs may have been longer than standard, but they weren't that long.

Roxie giggled as the car careened into traffic, the back tires squealing and the rear end of the hot rod doing a fish tail.

"This is fun, Cha! I like driving with you."

Cha Cha reminded her little sister, "This is going to be a long trip Roxie, don't tire yourself out. First we have to pick up Yodah, and then we are headed to Joplin to attend a Gang Meeting and memorial for Auntie Jewels."

Roxie looked at her with a perplexed statement for a moment. Finally she burst out with, "Whats a Yodah?!"

Cha Cha regarded her little sister sternly, but on the inside she was laughing in hysterics. "Wait my dear sis, and you shall see."

The girls made very good time on their trip to New England. Cha Cha had sent an email to Yodah, requesting that he meet the girls in a small town in the suburbs of Boston. Yodah responded on her cell phone line, asking them to pick him up in Quinzey. Cha could not find any Quinzey on the map. There was, however, a Quincy. Things were looking iffy. She pulled into a Friendly's Restaurant on Independence Avenue, delighted to see a black and white Chihuahua digging through some dumpster scraps. "Stop, Roxie, hit the brake!" The car came to a screeching halt, and the little Chihuahua was so startled, he jumped inside the plastic garbage bag in order to escape any contact with well meaning humans. Cha Cha burst into laughter. Roxie jumped out of the car with anticipation.

"What did I miss, what did I miss, oh please, oh please, tell me, Cha Cha, what did I miss? I hate missing things..." her chatter was interrupted by the sound of plastic rattling. She stared intently at the bag, getting into pounce mode, when out popped a little black Chihuahua head with a white stripe in the middle, bug eyes wide with horror.

"That,. my dear little sister, is a Yodah!" said Cha Cha triumphantly.

"I'll say." replied Roxie, giggling, "With whipped cream and a cherry on top!"

The girls wasted no time in pouncing on the poor Yodah creature, licking all of the sweet tasty treats off of his fur.

"Er.. uh... is this any way faaah an introduction?" protested Yodah.

"CHA.", declared Roxie, "He talks FUNNY. Why does he talk so FUNNY?"

"I don't know, Rox, tell us Yodah, why do you talk so FUNNY?"

Cha Cha jumped on Yodah again, and a wrestling match between all three dogs ensued. Finally, out of breath, on his back and left with no recourse, Yodah muttered,

"I... I suh-ren-dah!"

This did little to appease the two sisters, who broke into laughter once more.

"I... SUH-REN-DAAAAHHHH!" mocked Roxie, with tears coming out of her brown eyes.

Yodah did not understand what it was that was so funny. He took a few steps back from the Chi and the Min Pin, watching them in disbelief. Finally, Cha regained enough composure to explain to him.

"We've never heard an actual New Englander accent before, and you will have to excuse us. Mommy always said they talked different when she lived there, but we never knew it was true. You're simply delighful, Yodah!"

Roxie wagged her tail in agreement, and jumped up and down in her usual fashion. "Simply delightful..." she agreed, "with a cherry on top!" and with that she licked Yodah smack dab in the middle of his nose! Yodah blushed.

"Well... we really need to get on the road to Joplin if we are to meet the others," Cha Cha interrupted in a serious tone.

"Yes... " murmured Roxie and Yodah in unision. It was very important that they make it to Joplin on time for the memorial.

The three piled into the Corvette, and Cha Cha left the Friendly's Restaurant behind at top speed, burning rubber down the highway as Mama had taught her.

It was daybreak when Roxie woke up. She and Yodah had been taking turns helping Cha Cha with the clutch, and luckily, they were able to take naps in shifts so that they wouldn't waste much time. The Corvette rolled to a stop.

"Are we there yet" grumbled Roxie. She searched her older sister's face for an answer. Cha nodded.

"Yes, baby sis, you aren't in Pennsylvania anymore. This is Joplin..."

The three looked at each other in anticipation. What would await them in the day ahead? Why had Archie REALLY called a meeting of the Gangstas? Obviously, for the Memorial of Aunt Julie, but wasn't there something more?
