A few weeks ago, I had a chance to chat backstage with the Kids in the Hall in-between shows at New York City's Town Hall. Here's the transcript of an interview we taped with Dave Foley.

CRIS SALES: So Dave, tell me about the Media 100 System you're lugging around.

DAVE FOLEY: The Media 100 system? It's an excellent thing... A portable online digital editing studio that can fit in a shoulder bag, but I've got it in an equipment case that I carry it around with so I can do some editing on the road.

CRIS: Because?

DAVE: Because I want to learn how to do that, you know, just cutting stuff together. I think I've done about ten refinements of the Heavyfoot movie [featured in the stage show] since we've been on the road.

CRIS: I've heard that you guys have been shooting a lot of short things -- have you had a chance play around in New York?

DAVE: We've been shooting a lot of documentary stuff and we've been hoping to...(to a patient Mark McKinney trying to get past our camera...) Do you want to get by?

(At that point, Mark McKinney ran by, smiling for the camera, clad in a robe.)

DAVE: You see, one of the things actors like to do in between shows is to wear bathrobes for no reason at all...

(Beth Lewand, our Online Director, then chimed in.)

BETH: Why aren't you wearing a bathrobe?

DAVE: I'm not a very good actor. I didn't go to theatre school -- I didn't get taught to wear bathrobes.

CRIS: I also hear you've got a lot of toys -- you're into 3-D cameras?

DAVE: Yes, I collect 3-D cameras. (Pointing to another cameraman standing by.) That's my camera. This is one of my toys, Darren.

CRIS: You're shooting a documentary?

DAVE: Yeah, we're documenting the whole tour as we're traveling around. At some point we're gonna shoot the show itself.

CRIS: So you're multitasking...

DAVE: We are -- just sort of fooling around. We've been talking about trying to generate new video pieces to put in the show as we travel -- and start to get bored. (Big smile.)

CRIS: Have you been trying to make the show new in every city?

DAVE: (Laughs) Well, we haven't been, but we've definitely been out shooting stuff in the streets and trying to just have fun.

CRIS: It seems like you're into different forms of expression. If you could choose only one, which would you choose?

DAVE: Probably my painting. (Laughs) Comedy. Comedy in any of its facets. It's my favorite thing to do.

CRIS: Dave, thank you for taking time out to talk to us -- and here's something for you.

(He gets the booby prize, a package of South Park condoms.)

DAVE: What is that? Oh...You know, here I gotta say one thing to the kids... (Turning directly to the camera.) As big a fan as you may be of South Park ...novelty condoms? Not a great idea... When you're trying to avoid contracting a disease or impregnating someone you don't want to impregnate, you really want to have a more austere product. You wanna know that whoever made it took it seriously... So, NO to the novelty condom... That's my advice to youngsters.
