A few weeks ago, I had a chance to chat backstage with the Kids in the Hall
in-between shows at New York City's Town Hall. Armed with a between-show
snack of leftover Chinese food, Kevin McDonald sat down to chat with us,
and following is the transcript:
CRIS SALES: So, there's a shot of you and the guys on the cover this week's
Time Out New York -- you're the bride and the others are the bridesmaids.
How did you end up as the bride?
KEVIN MCDONALD: Well... Actually I got picked because I was the only one
who fit the wedding gown -- they had my size. But spiritually it makes a
lot of sense that I'm the bride, the happy bride -- they're the grumpy
bridesmaids. I can't explain it, but spiritually it makes sense -- though I
don't understand how it does make sense.
CRIS: Somebody told me to ask you about Los Angeles and how living there
may or may not have adversely affected your life...
KEVIN: Well, basically I bring my life with me -- Brianne, my girlfriend,
my movie videos, I have a station (in LA) that shows hockey... The only
thing it changed was that I drive now. I had to learn how to drive because
I didn't drive in Toronto. So I hear this a lot when I'm driving --
(shifting in his seat to indicate a driver rolling down his window), "SPEED
UP GRANDMA!" So that's how my life has changed -- a lot of people call me
Grandma 'cause I go a little slow. I'm not the strongest -- (directly into
the microphone) I'M NOT THE STRONGEST DRIVER.
CRIS: Tell me about your dog and how did he -- is he a he? -- get the name
Popular.
KEVIN: He is a "he." A Staffordshire terrier -- a beautiful one. We call
him Poppy, short for Popular, because we found him abandoned in a parking
lot in Hollywood, so we wanted to him to feel popular. And also he was
pooing a lot and Brianne was calling him Poopy, so we figured, Poopy, Poppy
-- it just made sense. We couldn't call him Poopy -- no dignity there.
(At this point Kevin took a bite of this Chinese food and chewed into the
microphone. I think it was General Tso's chicken -- use your imagination.)
CRIS: So here's a glaringly self-promoting Comedy Central question, what's
your favorite South Park episode, if you have one, and why?
KEVIN: You know, I've never seen South Park, just by coincidence. I don't
know when it's on. I know I would like it -- I know, (into the camera)
Comedy Central, I would like it... It's on the same time as hockey. But if
I did watch it, my favorite episode would be season three, episode four.
That would be my favorite.
CRIS: We'll send you a tape of it.
KEVIN: And I think there's a character named Kenny?
CRIS: Yes there is.
KEVIN: (into the camera) He's my favorite. (Shrugging) Hockey's just too
good.
CRIS: Thank you, Kevin.
KEVIN: Thank you -- (into the mic) THANK YOU VERY MUCH
