A Poem for Monica

As I stand in your warm embrace,
I fear what lies ahead - the prejudice, the discrimination.
It shouldn't bother me but it does.
It doesn't affect you; walking with your head high,
But I can't lift my own.

I can feel their stares already,
Hear their whispers, taste their bitterness.
Why does everything have to be so difficult?
We're feeding ourselves to the lions,
and they'll tear us apart, rip us to shreds
until there's nothing left but our tear filled eyes and broken hearts.

How can you be so strong,
when we're about to walk into a cage full of beasts?
In my heart it feels right and you tell me everything will be fine,
but they won't see it that way.
They'll be shocked, horrified, they'll talk about us at lunch,
Laugh behind our backs.

I don't think I could handle that....

They'll label us sick, disgusting....vile....the list is endless.
I don't want that to ruin our relationship,
But it will - they'll wear us down until we break.

How can I tell the world that I am in love with you,
Monica Reyes, the most beautiful, intelligent woman I have ever met?

They're just not ready for us yet....
