Dreaming

I had a dream the other night. This is a dialogue with a friend about the dream and what it may mean. It seems silly, but I don't want to forget the dream so, I decided to keep a record of it.

Yeah, I know, very Microserfs!

I am [gjm] whilst my friend is [pfs]
[gjm]

I had a dream the other night.

[gjm]

About the ideal job.

[gjm]

I rarely have dreams

[gjm]

Weird, eh?

[pfs]

Oooo, yes, do tell...

[pfs]

Mmmmmmm. Now this will be interesting...

[pfs]

Very weird, probably worth paying attention to it?

[gjm]

Well, it starts off with a number of people, including myself sitting around a big table. The table is a bit institutional (ie tatty) but perfectly functional. I say that "I'm fed up with this place and what we're working on, where is it all going". Others chip in with similar comments.

[pfs]

Ohhhhhh, sounds very reminiscent of your current situation, doesn't it.

[gjm]

The project manager who sits at another table turns around and wheels hsi chair over and listens to our bitching for a while and then says that we all need to take a rest. We've been working hard with our latest delivery and we are losing our edge. We all need to take a bit of time off. Since we all have several "aniversary days" owing we should take some of those and have a rest ; take a

[gjm]

longish weekend and come back refreshed.

[gjm]

We all agree that its a good idea and get up to take the rest of the day off and go home.

[pfs]

:-)

[gjm]

I walk past the end of the room (its a BIG room) and I see the automated test equipment that we have up an one end running continuously. Its all behind plexiglass screend for some reason.

[pfs]

Is something like this likely to happen at OT? Where you are told to take a break given how hard you all have been working?

[gjm]

The machiens are running a variety of test with soem sporting GUIs showing the current state. I feel tremendously proud of it all and am impressed by how far we have come in the time I've been with the company.

[pfs]

Or maybe this is the future job that you will have after March? Some other big company, with more effective organisation, more laid out like you want it to be, your dream... Sounds really nice actually!

[gjm]

I walk over to the window and stare out and realise how much I like working here --- wherever here is --- I've been here 10 years and even though it can be frustraing at times, I've enjoyed my time here. I can't imagine working anywhere else.

[gjm]

I realise what a good PM we have. He knows when to let people kick back.

[gjm]

I look out the window and see a small hill in the middle distance with some tree on it. There are wheat coloured fields around the base of the trees.

[gjm]

As I walk out of the building I see the company name on one of the buildings. We are in a moderately big complex - 3 or 4 buildings. We weren't always this big; we'd been bought out a few years back but nothing much changed.

[gjm]

I leave to go home and am quite relaxed and at peace with myself. Life seems good.

[pfs]

Sounds really nice actually, wow!

[pfs]

:-)

[gjm]

The only irritating thing is that I cannot clearly see the name of the company on the side of the building.

[gjm]

Aaargghh!

[gjm]

Clearly its time to move on.

[gjm]

I got the impression I was working for an embedded company which worked in the Comms business - telco or IP, I don't know. We have a good team of people and the product keeps getting better with every software release.

[gjm]

Nirvana!

[gjm]

So what does it all mean Herr Docktor?

[pfs]

Ha ha, well, that's how it is in dreams though - or even though you may see it during the dream it will be some script that makes no sense, or something you can't quite make out... Well, clearly it is your subconcious painting your ideal job out in front of you, so you are right, planning the next move would be the right thing to do. Nirvana or not, sounds very nice, wish I had dreams like that...

[gjm]

This is my first dream in months.

[pfs]

I think you have described it all very well, and you've provided the explanation at the end too. To me it simply is your subc painting out what it wants, what it would consider ideal, and I think it's really a hint to you to try and follow what you really want to do now, don't you think.

[pfs]

First in months may also be significant - if you have finally sorted out what you want in your mind, it starts creeping out of subc into your concious thought.

[gjm]

yes, I agree, its only going to be a pointer to what I need to find. My big problem with be recognising it when it presents itself.

[pfs]

That's about all the Herr Doktor can proscribe, quite clear cut... :-)

[gjm]

It was also one of those half-awake/asleep dreams which you have some kind of control over. You know where you make yourself look at peripheral things but don't know what you expect to see. Something looks interesting so you go and check it out but you don't know what you'll see.

[gjm]

Hence all the looking out of the window, wandering around the floor and wandering out of the office, ... I suppose.

[gjm]

***** Gotta go now, [pma] is waiting for me at lunch, speak later after I get back *****

[pfs]

Yes indeed, quite right. And recognising the opportunity is always the toughy - you can never plan that though, and it will present itself in the most unusual way... Anyway, enjoy lunch, say hi to Ms P for me, will talk when you get back, and I get into the office!
