Hey as you may know by now, I love old cars. Not the little cutesy, wimpy, falling-apart rattle-traps. I like the beasts of the 60's and 70's; the kinds of cars that wake up the neighborhood at 6:30 every day of the week, thundering sound up and down the street and shaking people out of their beds. Hey, it's time to get up anyways. Muscle cars are the best thing that ever happened to the car industry as far as I'm concerned. What if they never came about? We might all be driving around cute little carriages that go a maximum 30 mph. How'd you like that? huh? No, let me tell you something. It was these beasts, the Firebird, Mustang, Chevelle, Camaro and Malibu that brought about a revolution and an era of speed to the automotive industry.
~Story of my Firebird~
Of these 5 types, I have a 1969 Firebird that I bought in December of 1999. My baby has been a good girl during the time we have been going out, she's expensive, but she's worth it- she never complains. She also lets me do all of the driving and lets me go where I want, no arguing. She loves me because I usually only feed her the best, 92 Octane; hey I want her to have good gas, not bad gas. Some of our best times together include washing and waxing; I score points when I give her a good rubdown; I'm getting her clean too, so its like I'm killing two birds with one stone.
Somewhere around 1978, life got pretty rough for Ol' Bessy. She wasn't taken care of by her mean boyfriend. She was abused and ultimately it caused a wreck. As if that wasn't enough, this mean cold-hearted loser left her to rot in a barn. Can you believe that? Then the guy gets in trouble by the law for doing something stupid, and gets locked away for several years; I think it was a drug deal. So who is left to care for my baby? Nobody. She sits and sits and then sits some more. Well, unbeknownst to many people, she is rarin' to be fired up. She wants to get back on the road and find a new man to take care of her. The time came that she was found and bought by a man that saw her potential, and the restoration process began.
Then I came in and we fell in love at first sight. Just driving down the road with my brother Joe, I saw Ol' Bessy and I just knew we would have many good times together. I came home and it took a few weeks to convince my parents to let me pursue her, (they are usually pretty strict on who I date). It finally worked out, and we started dating in the beginning of Dec. 1999. Well here it is some time later, and we are still going strong.
I too have done some work on my sweetie, I put in a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor along with a brand new Edelbrock manifold for my 350 engine. I also put in a new starter, alternator, regulator, fuel filter, converted my points system to electronic ignition, and put in a very decent stereo system with two 10'' sub-woofers.
Here's a picture of us, posing out in front of my front yard.
Sadly to say, since that picture was taken, Ol' Bessy has been in 2 wrecks. Yes, one in March '00 and one in August '00. Fortunately for us, it wasn't either of our faults; both times it was the other driver that goofed. So Ol' Bessy got a new paintjob and new body work since that picture was taken, and is now living happily ever after with me.
In the future I will scan some of the restoration pictures, along with some of the pictures that were taken right after she got out of the body shop.
Check back for updates.
