On The Table

My earpiece sputtered to life and a scratchy voice barked straight into my eardrum. “Get your lazy ass up here, pronto! You have a new mission! And for heaven’s sake, dress properly this time!” The voice disappeared as abruptly as it came.

I smirked as I brushed an errant lock of fiery red hair off my eyes. He really is one uptight son of a bitch. So what if I hadn’t bothered to button my pants during the last mission briefing? Hell, no one told me that there’d be women up there. Not that the dames objected, mind you.

I swung my legs over the side of the bed and started putting on my boots. I never went anywhere without them. And my guns. Speaking of which, I wonder which of my lucky beauties I’ll take with me today. I eyed each of my weapons speculatively before finally deciding on a small, but powerful, automatic.

The magazine was half empty so I reached into the ammo drawer to fill her up. My hand came back full of bullets… and something else. I dropped the bullets unto the table and inspected the object. A fond smile tugged at my lips when I realized what it was. It was a house key, to *your* house, attached to a silver, oval holder. You had given it to me just before I left. “In case you need a place to stay afterwards” you said.

I traced the small engraved image on the metal surface with my thumb. It was your symbol, a sleeping fox curled inside its own tail. This time, the smile broke free as I gently laid the key on the table. This is where it belonged, side by side with my beauties, not hidden away in some drawer.

The magazine finally full, I slid it back into the pistol and slipped the whole thing snugly into the holster fitted around my thigh. I clipped an ammo belt around my hips and started out the door, buttoning my breeches along the way. I hadn’t bothered with a shirt, give those pervy ass holes something to ogle at. With that in mind, I left the top-most button undone. To hell with it, I chuckled silently, closing the door behind me.
