Wayne Gladman Mr. Haskell E-core History 17 September 2003 Greece hero to today’s Hero Over time the concept a hero has changed rapidly. When someone today thinks of a hero they may think a movie star because all of today’s so called heroes have very large bank accounts, now back during 461 B.C. in the golden age a hero was somebody like Pericles, or in other someone who was willing to give there life to save another person or even to save their own country. Though the one man I can best think of that resembles a hero back in those times was Socrates because he was a man that was very ahead of his time. He understood things that people could never even fathom and this is what led to his untimely death. Socrates was a true hero because he studied all his life to learn the many secretes of the human mind. Unlike today’s heroes where they are most likely In the entertainment business and are only focused on trying to make more and more money for themselves, yet some are incredibly generous and contribute to many charities or schools so some do truly have the qualities of a hero but the true test for these people would be if they would give something to somebody when they know that they will be hurt either emotionally or physically in return. However sadly the real heroes do not show up on MTV or VH1 they are the people that don’t get noticed but still try to do there best at whatever they do no matter if there a fireman, policeman, or even a mom and dad. Basically I don’t think the word hero will ever be understood by the human mind because for example even though Socrates was a hero the people killed him and even though the firemen and policemen are heroes they don’t exactly make millions of dollars a year. |
