Facts. The film was originally titled Glitter Kids. The oversized photograph of Jean Harlow in Jerry's office is in fact Eddie Izzard in drag. Todd Haynes originally wanted to cast British pop star Jarvis Cocker as Jack Fairy. When Brian first sees Mandy, he says "Do you jive?" That's what David Bowie is supposed to have said when he first saw his former wife, Angie. Maxwell Demon was the name of a band in which Brian Eno performed in the mid 60's. Venus In Furs is the name of a song by Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground. Also, Venus in Furs is the classic novel Leopold von Sacher-Masoch wrote detailing his masochist fantasies, which is supposed to have inspired Kafka. Shannon's discovery of Brian and Curt in bed together follows a story told by Angie Bowie, who says she found David Bowie in bed with Mick Jagger. In the movie, present day is set in 1984. Also, "Big Brother, baby, all the way." is a reference to George Orwell's masterpiece 1984. The novel, written in 1948, describes a fascist society. The cover of Friends by Elton John appears in the record store. "In a hi-speed master (a la Clockwork Orange) Brian rapes the wife doll and then the husband." (Direction for a scene in The Ballad of Maxwell Demon). Also, Stanley Kubrick is one of Todd Haynes' favourite directors. David Bowie's record company was called Main Man. When Iggy Pop was signed to the label he said "You could be my main man.", the same thing Curt says to Brian. "You just can't fake being gay. If they claim they're gay, they're just going to have to make love in gay style, and most of these people aren't capable of making that commitment. You can't fake being gay, because being gay means you're going to have to suck cock and get fucked. I think there's a very basic thing in a guy if he's straight where he's just going to say no. 'I'll act gay, I'll do this and I'll do that, but I can't do that.' Just like a gay person if they wanted to act straight and everything, but if you said 'Okay, go ahead, go to bed with a girl,' they're going to have to get an erection first."(Lou Reed). "I think rock should be tarted up, made into a prostitute, a parody of itself."(David Bowie). David Bowie said he wanted to be a pop idol during the graduation ritual for Bromley Polytechnical High School. Many of the most beautiful lines are taken from The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. The film structure is very similar to the structure of Citizen Kane (1941, directed by Orson Welles). In this classic movie that only won one Oscar (for best script), a journalist is assigned to find out the meaning of the last word of Charles Foster Kane. Errors. In New York the cars are driving on the left-hand side of the road and there are British traffic signs. During the "Death of Glitter" concert, an acoustic rhythm guitar can be heard playing throughout the song. There is however no one on stage playing an acoustic guitar. Also, during the "Death of Glitter" concert, the bassist of The Flaming Creatures takes his hands off the bass for several seconds to reattach the shoulder strap, during the song "20th Century Boy". Meanwhile, the bassline of the song continues uninterrupted. Throughout the Death of Glitter concert scene, Curt's fingernails are painted, but when he cups Mandy's cheek after coming off stage, his nails are unpainted. Arthur recognizes Shannon during a press conference, despite never having met her. The flashback we see was Mandy Slade's not Arthur's. |
