Also, Venus in Furs is the classic novel Leopold von Sacher-Masoch wrote detailing his masochist fantasies, which is supposed to have inspired Kafka. Shannon's discovery of Brian and Curt in bed together follows a story told by Angie Bowie, who says she found David Bowie in bed with Mick Jagger. In the movie, present day is set in 1984. Also, "Big Brother, baby, all the way." is a reference to George Orwell's masterpiece 1984. The novel, written in 1948, describes a fascist society. The cover of Friends by Elton John appears in the record store. "In a hi-speed master (a la Clockwork Orange) Brian rapes the wife doll and then the husband." (Direction for a scene in The Ballad of Maxwell Demon). Also, Stanley Kubrick is one of Todd Haynes' favourite directors. David Bowie's record company was called Main Man. When Iggy Pop was signed to the label he said "You could be my main man.", the same thing Curt says to Brian. "You just can't fake being gay. If they claim they're gay, they're just going to have to make love in gay style, and most of these people aren't capable of making that commitment. Meanwhile, the bassline of the song continues uninterrupted. Throughout the Death of Glitter concert scene, Curt's fingernails are painted, but when he cups Mandy's cheek after coming off stage, his nails are unpainted. Arthur recognizes Shannon during a press conference, despite never having met her. The flashback we see was Mandy Slade's not Arthur's. |
