Status Quo History

There have been many dates suggested as the one for Quo’s inception, and the fact that their anniversaries don’t all tie in with each other just adds to the confusion. However the origins of the band can be traced back to 1962 when Alan Lancaster, whilst still at school in Kent already had a traditional jazz band. The jazz band becomes a beat group, and Alan invites his friend Francis Rossi (then known as Michael) to join, along with classmate Jess Jaworski on Vox organ. The band make their debut at a sports club in Dulwich (south-east London), and soon after recruit John Coghlan as permanent drummer. They originally call themselves The Scorpions, but soon change that to the Spectres.

The group secure a residency at the Café des Artistes in London, and later appear on the same bill as The Hollies, which further secures them a job at Butlins Holiday camp in the summer. In 1965 Jaworski quits the band to be replaced by Roy Lynes, and whilst they are playing at Butlins in Minehead, first meet Rick Parfitt who is touring holiday camps with two young ladies in a group called The Highlights.

Signed to Pye records, the group release three singles but unfortunately with no chart success. They briefly change their name to Traffic Jam, releasing one single - Almost But Not Quite There - but following legal problems (the name was deemed too similar to Steve Winwood’s Traffic) they drop the name, and at the suggestion of their manager become The Status Quo.

Rick Parfitt joins the group, and the band score their first chart hit with Pictures of Matchstick Men in 1968, the success of which leads to a support slot with Gene Pitney. Whilst the follow up single Black Veils of Melancholy fails to chart in the UK, Pictures... becomes a hit in the United States. An early summer tour is followed by the release of the Picturesque Matchstickable Messages album. Ice In The Sun becomes a hit for The Status Quo in the UK and US.

By 1970, the group have become simply Status Quo, and after their second album Spare Parts has failed to chart, they decide on a change of musical direction, resulting in the release of Down The Dustpipe, the first single to hint at the style of Quo to come. Roy Lynes leaves the band as the Ma Kelly’s Greasy Spoon album is released. The album is much more blues based, as is their final album on the Pye label, Dog of Two Head.

For the next three years the group tours heavily around the UK, and begin to gain popularity with their heavier sound. The group sign to Vertigo records, and in 1973 release the Piledriver LP, which reaches the top 5 in the UK album charts. The single Paper Plane consolidates their success and the group appear at the Reading Rock Festival. Caroline is a huge success and the Hello album enters the chart at Number 1, proving that Quo have arrived and are here to stay.

In 1975, Quo achieve their first (and so far only) official UK No.1 single Down Down, although they have achieved No.1 status in some independent charts. By the end of 1976 Andy Bown has become a permanent member of the group, although he had already recorded with the band as far back as the Hello album. For the next few years Quo continue to be successful in the singles charts, whilst all their albums make it into the Top 5. As a riposte to critics who label the band as three-chord wonders they release Living On An Island, another single success.

In 1981 The group is presented with the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Silver Clef Award. In 1982, John Coghlan decides to leave the band, not least to pursue commitments with his own band Diesel. He is replaced by Pete Kircher for the recording of the new album, 1982. The artwork (1+9+8+2 = XX) hints at the fact that the album is celebrating the band’s 20th anniversary, and it becomes yet another Number 1.

The group go on to play the inaugural concert for the launch of The Prince’s Trust, with HRH Prince Charles in theaudience, at the NEC in Birmingham. The concert is broadcast live on BBC1 and BBC Radio 1, and the opening track Caroline is released as a single. To round the year off the band release From The Makers Of..., a boxed set of two cassettes or three LP’s featuring significant singles and album tracks from the band’s career, as well as ten tracks from the NEC concert. A numbered limited edition version is also released with the albums contained in a metal tin. Despite the then relatively high cost of £10 (£12 for the metal tins), FTMO makes it to number 4 in the album charts, and the metal editions are so popular that an unnumbered edition is also re-released.

By 1984 Alan Lancaster has moved to live permanently in Australia, and internal disputes within the band prompt them to announce an end to touring. The End Of The Road tour is a sell-out success, with a massive concert at the Milton Keynes Bowl. During the gig Francis Rossi assures the crowd that the band is not splitting and that they will still be recording together, although both he and Rick Parfitt go on to record away from the band.

In 1985, following Parfitt and Rossi’s appearance on Band-Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? Quo open the spectacular Live Aid concert with , which the BBC has appropriately been using to advertise the event. Alan Lancaster flies in from Australia especially for the event. Rossi & Parfitt later admit that having done Live Aid they are itching to get back on the road. Phonogram, Vertigo’s parent company, press for Quo to fulfil their contractual obligations for another three albums, but internal disputes in the band reach an all time high, with Alan Lancaster taking out an injunction to prevent Parfitt and Rossi recording as Status Quo without him. They maintain that they are seen as the public face of the band and the High Court eventually sides with them. Pete Kircher quits the line-up, and new recruits Jeff Rich and John ’Rhino’ Edwards, who have worked with Parfitt on his (unreleased) solo album are taken on board.

In 1986 the band releases Rollin’ Home which becomes a top 10 hit, and they support Queen at Wembley Stadium on a bill which also features The Alarm and INXS. The In The Army Now album is another Top 10 album, with the title track making number 2 in the singles chart, kept off the top by Nick Berry’s Every Loser Wins. Alan Lancaster is asked to join Australian group, The Party Boys, who release their version of John Kongo’s 1971 hit He’s Gonna Step On You Again, which is a No.1 hit in Australia although it fails to chart in the UK.

In 1988, following a precedent set by Tears For Fears, Status Quo re-record Rocking All Over The World as Running All Over The World for the Sport Aid event. They also record a version with the original lyrics which is played at the end of the Top Of The Pops 21st Birthday Special, and released on an eponymous LP in the US.

Despite an ever decreasing amount of airplay from radio stations who brand the band unfashionable Quo have a top 5 hit with Burning Bridges from the Ain’t Complaining album. However, radio stations are increasingly considering Quo singles too unfashionable to playlist, and this contributes to the poor showing of the Perfect Remedy album and it’s singles.

In 1990, Quo do manage another number 2 single with the Anniversary Waltz, and a number 16 with the followup, not surprisingly called Anniversary Waltz Part 2. The greatest Hits album Rockin All Over The Years is a huge success, receiving a four-star review in Q Magazine, and selling over 100,000 copies in 10 days. They go on to do a show for press and fan-club members at Butlins in Minehead as part of their (confusingly) 25th Anniversar celebrations.

In 1991 The group is honoured at the annual Brit Awards with the Outstanding Contribution To British Music Award, where they perform a medley of four of their biggest hits. They also receive a World Music Award at a ceremony in Monte Carlo. Later this year they enter the Guinness Book Of Records by doing a national tour of the UK in 12 hours, performing in Glasgow, Sheffield, Birmingham and Wembley. The event, Rock ’Til You Drop, receives massive publicity. The following year they headline BBC Radio 1’s Party In The Park celebrations. The subsequent live album Live Alive Quo, whilst not a huge chart success, nevertheless proves that the band still take some beating as a live act, andreceives an accolade from Q magazine that it contains a version of Caroline which ”pisses on the original and then steals it’s wallet!”

In 1993, Rossi & Parfitt publish their ”Just For The Record” autobiography, and the tour that year carries the same name. Thirsty Work appears in 1994, and in 1995 Quo announce that their 30th Anniversary album will feature cover versions of songs by such artists as The Beach Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Fleetwood Mac. Called Don’t Stop the album is released in 1996, and makes number 2. Quo also take Radio 1 to court, partly accusing them of being ageist, and partly of going back on their word that in return for headlining the Party In The Park event they would be given more consideration for airplay. Despite losing the hearing the band considers the action a success in so much as it has raised awareness of the issue.

In 1994 Manchester United FC have a chart-topping single Come On You Reds which is based on Burning Bridges, which the band perform on and produce

In 1997 the band continues to tour and sets about recording a new album with a new producer, Mike Paxman, at the helm. Meanwhile Whatever You Want, another Greatest Hits compilation, is another success. Existing touring commitments in the UK and Europe make the recording of the new album a slow process, but towards the end of 1998 the title is announced as Under The Influence. It is eagerly awaited, and due for release March 29th 1999 on Eagle Records.
