Glantraeth 0 Mynydd Isa 2
Report by Stan Strickland

The visitors took the lead in the third minute as Stuart Wood swung in a cross from the right and Anthony Williams rose to head home. It was the worst possible start for Glan and it was the visiting side that continued on top during the opening quarter hour with Danny Farrell’s shot on the turn six minutes later requiring a spectacular save from Glan keeper Marc Newbould and Dean Hardstaff missing a good opportunity after being fed by Barry Calder.

The visitors are the form team of the league at present and it was showing as Glan struggled to make any real impression on the visitor’s rearguard, the closest coming on 16 minutes as an Emyr Rowlands’ header was deflected for a corner kick.

As Glan gradually got to grips with Isa the game settled into more of a midfield scrap with few chances at either end although the Anglesey side were fortunate on the twenty minute mark as Farrell broke free with Glan appealing for offside and it took another fine save from Newbould to stop him.

There was some panic in the Isa defence on 23 minutes as keeper Stuart McIntosh spilled the ball which fell loose to Emyr Rowlands but he failed to connect cleanly and the ball was cleared and the visitors had another escape eight minutes later as a defensive mistake let in David Alan Jones whose curling shot was pushed over by McIntosh.

It was almost two for Isa twelve minutes into the second period as again Glan were left claiming offside as substitute Ian Price ran clear only to pull his shot badly wide. There was no let off for the home side three minutes later as John Leonard was left with a one on one with Newbould and neatly dinked the ball over the advancing Glantraeth keeper.

Isa were now well on top and were unlucky not to go three up on 64 minutes as Paul Connolly met a cross from Anthony Williams only to see he looping header come down on the crossbar.

Kevin Roberts tried his luck a minute later but his shot was too high to trouble McIntosh in the Isa goal and it was again the visitors who went closest with Williams firing wide from a good position then Newbould did well to recover and save a deflected shot from Stuart Wood.

Glan had a good spell of possession in the final fifteen minutes with Andy Tower firing over following a good cross from Adam Jones then McIntosh did well to save at close range from Gareth Owen but the goal that might have given the home side a fighting chance just would not come and Isa continued their march up the table.

It had been a subdued performance by Glantraeth when compared to last week’s inspiring victory at Ruthin but they have to quickly put the result behind them with a big game at third from bottom Gresford next weekend.

Glantraeth: Marc Newbould, Bryn Jones, Adam Jones, Andy Tower, Gareth Owen, Anthony Hughes (Mark Owens 78), Caerwyn Roberts, Emyr Rowlands, David Alan Jones (James Burgess 66), Kevin Roberts, Chris Evans
