Glantraeth 1 Mold Alex 1
Report by Stan Strickland

This was a game Glantraeth should have won with goals to spare but in the end they were happy to settle for a point, the equaliser coming from Kevin Roberts with only six minutes remaining.

Glan attacked from the start Gerallt Jones almost taking advantage of a poor clearance by visiting keeper James Collins in the 7th minute and a minute later the same player almost found Corey Sinnott with a ball threaded through the Mold defence.

The visitors had Collins to thank on 11 minutes as the keeper did well to save with his legs as Kevin Roberts closed in from the right and struck a right foot shot powerfully on target. Kevin Roberts fired wide five minutes later as the Bodorgan side continued on top.

In their first meaningful attack Mold took the lead on 22 minutes as Glan lost the ball cheaply in the middle of the park leaving Dave Pitson to break free on the right and he picked his spot beautifully with a curling shot into the top corner giving home keeper Marc Newbould no chance.

From the kick-off Glan responded with a low shot from Paul Rowlands that was narrowly wide and went even closer a minute later as a quick break by Sinnott set up a chance for Darren Jones to let rip with a shot that came back of the keeper’s knees.

There was no luck for the home side on 25 minutes as Collins failed to hold a header from Kevin Roberts and spilled the ball against a post.

Despite lying seventh in the table Mold were failing to impress but Glan were not making their superiority count and could easily have fallen further behind on the half-hour as Darren Pritchard rounded Newbould but fired wide from an acute angle.

There was lots of possession for Glan as half-time approached but too often moves were breaking down in good positions through a poor final pass.

Playing with the wind at their backs the home side had a great chance to pull level within two minutes of the restart as Kevin Roberts cross from the left was met by Darren Jones but he got under the ball and his shot flew over without troubling Collins. Darren Jones again fired over on 53 minutes in what was turning into another frustrating afternoon for the Anglesey side.

A snap shot from Mold substitute Matty Roberts was smartly saved by Newbould five minutes later but it was a rare threat from the visitors and Gantraeth were soon back on the attack with Chris Saxon giving Kevin Roberts a shooting opportunity that was deflected just over. The corner kick led to another scramble in the Mold goalmouth before the ball was finally cleared.

Mold were hanging on determinedly to their lead as Chris Evans had a shot blocked, David Hughes saw a dipping shot from 25 yards pass inches over and only a full length save from Collins on 75 minutes kept out Chris Saxon’s glancing header from a Paul Rowlands’ cross that looked to be creeping just inside a post. Mold threatened briefly two minutes later through a fine effort from Dave Pitson that curled just over.

With ten minutes remaining Glantraeth were desperate to rescue something from a game they had dominated and Saxon was only inches away from making contact with a Chris Evans free kick on 81 minutes but finally they gained their reward three minutes later as Kevin Roberts buried the ball in the bottom corner for a well deserved equaliser.

Glantraeth were pressing forward for the winner when the final whistle inexplicably sounded with no added time and almost 30 seconds of the allotted 45 minutes still to play.
