Pre-Season Friendly
18 July 2006
Glantraeth 1 Shrewsbury Town XI 1

An evenly matched contest saw honours shared as Glantraeth opened their pre-season programme with a visit from Shrewsbury Town’s academy side and it was the visitors who came closest to taking the lead after 20 minutes as Gary Ellison let fly from twenty yards only to find keeper Steve Thomas well positioned for a comfortable save. Two minutes later Glan went close as Mark Thomas met a Robbie Williams corner only to see his header blocked on the line. The Bodorgan side continued to press with Richard Owen breaking dangerously only to be denied by a great saving tackle by Town’s Dan Barnett.
On the half-hour mark the Shropshire side took the lead as Daniel Ellison was brought down by Thomas with Ellison easily converting from the spot kick. The visitors finished the half on top but it was Glantraeth who came out the stronger after the break and following a period of pressure Kevin Roberts levelled matters on 54 minutes as he broke clear down the middle and picked his spot perfectly to beat keeper Jasbir Singh’s despairing dive with a well placed shot that found its way just inside a post.
On a glorious summer evening on what must be one of the most scenic football grounds in the British Isles both sides continued to press for a winner despite the hot conditions with Shrewsbury coming close five minutes from time as Dylan Williams headed just wide following a right wing corner.
Glantraeth came within a whisker of claiming victory in the final minute as Mark Thomas brought a finger tip save from Singh with the ball being deflected just wide of the inrushing Anthony Hughes.
