Glantraeth 3 Flint Town United 3

A game which pitched two teams fancied to do well in the Alliance this season. Glantraeth, last seasons double winners, and Flint Town, who had ambitions of Welsh Premier football but a three point deduction for a non-fulfillment of a fixture early on proved costly in the end as the Deeside based club eventually finished in third spot.

Flint also had the record of being the only side to win a league game at Glantraeth's Bodorgan ground last season, when on a rain-swept day they pulled off a shock 1-0 win. So a mouthwateringt first fixture of 2006/2007 season, and what a game it turned out to be as Flint took an early lead, Glantraeth fought back to three goals to one early in the second half, before giving away two goals for the game to eventually finish 3-3. A fair result in a very entertaining game. New recruits Paul Rowlands, Anthony Hughes and Osian Pritchard all making their home debuts in Paul Whelan's new look squad.

Kevin Roberts had the first chance but was just short with his outstretched boot and failed to connect. A minute later following a goalmouth scramble Shaun Beck opened for the visitors althought Steve Thomas did well to block ths initial point blank shot. Kevin Roberts then tried his luck with a free kick but it sailed harmlessly over the crossbar. On 28 minutes following a goalmouth scramble at the other end of the park Glantraeth equalised. Nigel Barry put in a dangerous free kick it was headed on by Warren Gibbs and in a flurry of flying legs Richard Owen tapped in at the far post. The home side then took the lead after 37 minutes Mark Thomas's cross finding poacher Richard Owen whose glancing header beat keeper Steve Muir, all this followed some excellent build up play by Glantraeth. Some very good one touch passing then saw Paul Rowlands force a corner and from the resulting corner by Rowlands, Gareth Owen failed to connect with his head. HT 2-1.

Kevin Roberts then had an early chance in the second half before Emyr Rowlands put a ball down the right touchline to Paul Rowlands he squared the ball across the face of the goal and incoming at the far post was Kevin Roberts to get his second of the game and put Glantraeth into the driving seat at 3-1. Keeper Steve Thomas then had to be on his toes to save an effort from Shaun Beck, before at the other end Richard Owen saw a chance deflected for a corner. A minute later following a Kevin Roberts corner Mark Thomas headed over the bar.

In a spell of Flint pressure Mike Allsopp headed wide before the visitors then scored a goal out of nothing as Shaun Beck put a ball accross the goal that went through keeper Steve Thomas's legs to the unmarked Allsopp for a simple tap in. Two minutes later the Flint side were on level terms with Glantraeth appealing for offside Dean Hughes hit a shot angled past the outstretched hand of Thomas to make it 3-3. In the dying moments of the game as Glantraeth pushed for a winner Roberts who was on for a hat-trick saw his shot cleared off the goal-line by Steve Halewood following a Nigel Barry free kick, and Steve Thomas pulled of a brilliant save to deny Allsopp. All in all a fair result on the day.
