Glantraeth 0 Bala Town 1
Report by Stan Strickland

Leaders Bala will face few tougher examinations this season as Glantraeth gave a battling performance that belied their lowly league position.

Glan looked in determined mood from the off with Emyr Rowlands swerving a shot wide on 4 minutes and two minutes later Anthony Hughes came close to converting a fine cross from Chris Evans.

The first goal chance for the visitors arrived on the 19 minute mark as keeper Marc Newbould was down quickly to save from Warren Duckett but it was the Anglesey side that came closest to opening the scoring as a superb ball in from Jarlath Glynn was met by Kevin Roberts but he could not direct his header on target, a real let off for Bala.

Kevin Roberts again threatened with a header on 22 minutes, this time from an Adam Jones cross, in what was proving a really promising opening from the home side.

Bala began to crank up some pressure as the half-hour mark approached and Newbould was again forced to react smartly to save from Tommy Mutton but the Glan defence led by skipper Gareth Owen was in determined mood and the visitors just could not make a breakthrough.

Leading by example caretaker manager Emyr Rowlands tried his luck from 25 yards on 28 minutes following a flowing move that opened up the Bala defence and a minute later saw a a shot blocked at close range following a corner in from the right. Eppy McFadden then drove forward and hit a tremendous drive from 30 yards that dipped just over.

It had been an encouraging first forty-five minutes from Glantraeth but there was still plenty to do and the second period opened with Bala pushing forward, a good run from Duckett ending with him shooting just wide then a sloppy throw-in gifted the visitors possession and Osian Jones almost took advantage.

Glan came so close to taking the lead on 58 minutes as Emyr Rowlands’ powerful shot from outside the box appeared to be heading for the top corner only for Bala keeper Leon Bimpson to just get his finger tips to the ball with a top class flying save.

It was a big blow when Glantraeth finally fell behind three minutes later as Tommy Mutton was left in far too much space to head home following a cross from the right.

Instead of wilting Glan stepped up a gear and were desperately unlucky on 66 minutes as Emyr Rowlands drove in a free kick that beat Bimpson only to strike the bar but it was the signal for all out attack on the Bala goal. For a fifteen minute period the leaders were penned right back as Glan fought tigerishly for the equaliser, Mark Owens and Anthony Hughes going closest.

Bala rode out the storm and as the game entered its final ten minutes came near to adding a second as Newbould saved well from Mutton and Owain Roberts.

It was another defeat for the Bodorgan Boys but they can take great heart from this performance against the title favourites and with more signings likely to be made in the last week of the transfer window there is renewed hope that improved results might follow.

Glantraeth: Marc Newbould, Eppy McFadden, Adam Jones, Andy Tower, Gareth Owen, Jarlath Glynn, Mark Owens, Emyr Rowlands, Anthony Hughes, Kevin Roberts, Chris Evans.
