Llanfair PG 1 Glantraeth 1

Whenever our two clubs seem to meet each other the weather seems to turn wet and miserable and tonight’s game was no exception. The weather might have been awful but the game was a typical example of the traditional Anglesey derby, full of incident, a penalty miss for the home side, a clear penalty which everyone apart from the officials saw for the visitors, Glantraeth. There were a number of chances at either end of the park with several saves by both goalkeepers who were in top form. Glantraeth welcomed back Rob Williams and making his first appearance was Craig Roberts, Mark Owens who hit the target last Saturday had to sit this one out.

The first chance of the game fell on fifteen minutes as Rob Williams found Kevin Roberts and his curling header was well saved by Ben Heald in the Llanfair PG goal. Paul Rowlands, whose darting runs troubled Llanfair all night, whipped in a good cross that the home defence just managed to clear with Mark Thomas lurking. On possession Glantraeth had the majority but no goals to show for it. Nigel Barry hit a rasper of a shot but was a little too far out.

Following a Glantraeth corner won by Nigel Barry play broke to the other end where Emyr Rowlands found himself beaten by Jonathan Sadler and pulled him back in the area by the shorts. The official awarded a penalty that Sadler himself took and struck the foot of the post to the relief of Glantraeth. Half-time score 0-0.

Llanfair came out fired up at the start of the second half and Steve Thomas had to be alert to save from Burgess and then Evans in quick succession. On 48 minutes Sadler hit a ball into the area that deflected off Tony Williams and into the net to put the home side 1-0 up. At the other end Paul Rowlands blazed a good effort over the bar from an Emyr Rowlands long throw. Mark Thomas then headed over before another Emyr Rowlands long throw fell nicely to Rob Williams who shot through a crowd of players. 1-1. Jonathan Sadler then shot wide and Glan were denied what looked a certain penalty as Mark Thomas was fouled as he shaped to head into an open goal. A Paul Rowland effort was well saved by Heald, Mark Thomas headed over and in the final minutes Heald pulled off a tremendous save to deny Nigel Barry. 1-1, a fair score on the night.

Glantraeth: Steve Thomas, Emyr Rowlands, Darren Jones, Warren Gibbs, Gareth Owen, Nigel Barry, Rob Williams, Mark Thomas, Richard Owen (Craig Roberts 45), Kevin Roberts, Paul Rowlands (Anthony Hughes 85).
