Words in the Cyberculture
A Links Website

archie comics strip character saying Internet terminology can sometimes be confusing. I wouldn't advise walking into a cybercafe and saying something like:
"Archie has a great new cyberpunk bandwidth.     Does anyone know where the gateway is to his domain?"
I think it's safe to say that this would end any possibility of conversation there.

After all, Archie isn't found in the comic strips any longer even though you can pay a great deal for some of the old back issues on his comic books. On the internet, Archie is something else again.

Unless you're really initiated into the cyber culture, terms like cyberpunk, might mean something that comes out of a bar one night with a really strange haircut. It might, but, on the internet it's something else.

With the war in Afghanistan fresh in our minds, the term Flame War
Flame War, might bring up visions of old newsreel films with GI's and flamethrowers walking through the hills.

And, hey, let's not forget Gateway. It's not just the name of a computer company represented by a herd of holstein cows working their waya to the meat counter at your local Ultra or Jewel store.

Fortunately, we've found a site on the internet created by Matisse Enzer. The site is located at http://www.matisse.net/files/glossary.html. Although this site is copyrighted by Mr Enzer (1994-2001) I have borrowed freely from the site for this exercise. Also be aware that the Archie comic strip is not mine. Wish that it were when I think of the millions sold. Archie came to this site from http://www.archiecomics.com/comics0101_template.html Because of the sheer volumn of definitions and the limited scope of this project, I only borrowed a sampling of the terms available from the Matisse site. Please feel free to review this wonderful resource on your own time. Check out the glossary now to learn more about some terms you'll be using in the next few weeks.
