ANDREW SMITH 1st Division Andrew's performance with the bat in scoring 438 runs @ 36.50 plus taking 8 catches (most of them classics) was instrumental in the first division side improved performances this year. In particular, his two unbeaten centuries were made in difficult circumstances and lifted the side immensely. His enthusiasm in the field set the standard for the rest of the side. A first class attitude both at training and on match day makes Andrew a true recipient of this award. Other nominees: Jeremy Schultz 1st Division - 17 year old Jeremy's first full season in 1st grade was very impressive. Being a wicket-keeper and no.3 batsman is a most difficult thing to do, even for an established cricketer. His 436 runs @ 27.25 plus 18 dismissals were a good reflection in his effort of this year. His competitiveness and enthusiasm behind the stumps were infectious. Mike Del Forno 1st Division - the veteran of the side, finished with 29 wickets @ 13.85 to win the Association 1st Division bowling award. Experience and advice were highlighted in several games this year. Good enthusiasm and a real team man. Shane Schultz 2nd Division - Shane held the 2nd division side's batting together at crucial times this year. Ably assisted skipper Craig Moffat with his experience. His 237 runs @ 18.25 were often scored in difficult circumstances. Took some good catches at 1st slip. John Baartz 5th Division - John's first year with the club was impressive. One of the few 5th division players prepared to put in the effort at training was well rewarded with some good performances with the ball. Highlight of the year was a sensational hat-trick in the game against Landsborough when "The Prez" Aaron Ruhle took a spectacular diving catch at 2nd slip to bring off the hat-trick. His 18 wickets @ 17.05 was a good reward for his endeavours. made some useful knocks with the bat as well. Along the way he amassed 481 runs @ 60.13, 34 wickets @ 5.12 and took 16 catches. His unselfishness in sometimes demoting himself in the batting order to give some other players a chance showed that he put the team first. His sportsmanship on the field could not be faulted. Also represented the club in the under 12 development side that went to Lismore. Has just been chosen in the Sunshine Coast Emerging Players program. Bradley Richards under 14A - Brad's performance in opening the batting and bowling should be recognised as this is not an easy thing to do. His fielding and attitude to the team was always positive. His overall performance of 337 runs 2 22.47, 23 wickets @ 8.70 and 5 catches in club games was outstanding. Brad also represented the club in the under 14 Development carnival side which won the competition. Aaron Glass under 14A - Aaron joined the club from Caloundra this year and immediately made an impact with both his ability and attitude to his team mates. Blessed with a quick wit, Aaron inevitably got the necessary breakthrough with his accurate outswingers, He finished with 22 wickets @ 7.59, 115 runs @ 11.78 and took an amazing 14 catches, mostly at slip. Kirk Jeffs under 16A - Kirk captained the side to victory in the President's Cup and the semi finals. His performances with both bat and ball were instrumental in the side making it that far. PHIL TUFFNELL FIELDING AWARD This award is given to the player who shows most promise in emulating the "Great Man". There are several nominees: Dan Kelly - 5th Division - Dan's fielding has improved remarkably this year but there were several instances where the famous "DK Dive" was brought into play necessitating the nearest fielder to chase the ball!!!! Greg "Jungle Cat" Balkin - 5th Division - Greg's back again this year with his stealth like movements in the field a prominent feature of the 5th Division side. Confirmed his early nomination for the award with two superb tunnel ball efforts as a substitute in 1st grade against Nambour. Darren Howard - 2nd Division - "Howies" dry sense of humour was a feature of the 2nd division side this year and it was certainly needed at times! There were a few incidents where his team mates thought that he was using his gloves to stop the ball where a catch would have been easier. Kirk Jeffs - 2nd Division - "Chardonnay" as his team mates know him, had a reasonable season with the 2nd division side both with bat and ball. He must also grasp the concept that the legs can not only be used for batting and bowling but actually running after the ball in the field. Mike Del Forno - 1st Division - In his only 2nd Division match, earned the nomination when the captain foolishly positioned him away from his entrenched 1st slip anchorage to backward point. Sure enough , the batsman struck the ball directly to him, at what can only be described as an awkward height. The mind quickly raced "fingers pointing up" or "fingers pointing down" to take the catch. This was too much for the brain to handle with the end result being a half kneeling statue, a bruised chest and the ball on the ground. Brian Schultz - 1st Division - This incident probably would have gone unnoticed except for some TV footage of the 1st division game v Maroochydore. Only nominated when son Jeremy was writhing around the floor in a fit of laughter. The ball was snicked through gully, Schultzie was after it like a steam train. The only problem was the steam train looked like it was on a tread m ill - reminded everyone of one of those cartoon scenes where the legs were moving but the body wasn't!!! Matt Shaw - 1st Division - in the away game against Tewantin/Noosa when runs were hard to come by, all the opposition had to do was hit it towards Shawy. Whether along the ground, in the air or straight to him, the batsman knew there were runs as he invariably missed it. He even had trouble catching the ball when his team mates threw it to him between overs. Terry Jones - 1st Division - This "Ricky Ponting" clone, proved time and time again of his value to the team - batting. Only person in the team who needs a relay throw from gully. Feature of his bowling was the shirt hanging out and black underpants shining through. This was especially attractive on the TV footage of our game v Maroochydore. However, all of these pale into significance compared to this year's award winner. Started from the game against Caboolture with a superb tunnel ball effort, continued with his efforts in 2nd grade perfecting a "DK Dive" of his own and culminated in the penultimate game of the season. Perfectly positioned on the midwicket boundary, the batsman accepted the challenge and struck the ball directly towards him. However, the ball wasn't hit as perfectly as was first thought and it appeared that the fieldsman would have to actually move a whole 2 metres to take the catch. In most games this would seem a fairly simple task, especially for the man who claims to have "The safest hands on the coast" (and let's everyone know about it). To the bowler's dismay, the ball dropped safely in front of the fielder - who later claimed cramp was the cause. Congratulations Aaron "Noddy" De Battista on winning this year's PHIL TUFFNELL FIELDING AWARD. FLUSH DUCK AWARDS Again this is an award which some players actually train for... You can pick them out at training. They regularly get bowled in the nets and offer catches in centre wicket practice to perfect the Art of Non-Scoring. O not out does not count if you have faced more than one ball. Under 16 - This was a no contest affair with the recipient marking his dominance with two "pairs". Batting 9 times and finishing with 6 ducks, congratulations DYLAN COOK. 5th Division - This team surprisingly did not have as many ducks as last season. Never seen so many batsman raise their bat after scoring their first run! Obviously more practise is needed. This man made it his own, congratulations DANNY KELLY 2nd Division - with a total of 36 ducks this season, 2nd's obviously put in the hard yards at training to perfect the Art of Non-Scoring not even Shane Schultz was immune with 4 ducks. In a closely fought contest that was in the balance until the very end - it was DARREN HOWARD who shone through with 5 ducks. 1st Division - Again not as many ducks this year (maybe the fine system has put people off). Brian Schultz must have worked hard in the off season and this showed with him managing 2 ducks, 2 x 2's, 1 x3 and 2 x 4's in his scoring feats this year. He wasn't going to be a nominee. Mike Cran started well early with 3 ducks in his first 8 innings but fell away after that and started scoring runs. In the end it boiled down to a fight amongst the tailenders. Gary Bolton, Mike Del Forno and Aaron "Noddy" De Battista. Noddy even had the chance to score runs after Mike unselfishly gave up his no.10 spot to Noddy. What did he get - a duck. In the end, Noddy's two golden ducks won the day, congratulations AARON "NODDY" DE BATTISTA.
DUMMY SPIT OF THE YEAR No contest - this year's winner is JACINTA ELKS....
