Essays for PSYC 301, Biol Basis of Behavior.   A good essay will be about a page long and will include many terms, concepts and examples from the course.  

 

Use paragraphs to logically structure your essays.   Sometimes more than one essay will cover much the same material, so that some  essays will be similar to other essays.

 

First exam: 

1. Discuss evolution and its usefulness in helping scientists understand the biological basis of behavior.  Then, discuss the comparative approach in research in this area.

2. Discuss behavior as a product of nature and nurture.

3. Discuss organization in the human brain and different structures in the human brain.

4. Discuss structure and function of neurons. 

5. Discuss invasive and noninvasive methods scientists use to study the nervous system.

6. Discuss neurons and the contacts they make (synapses), and excitation and inhibition. 

7. Discuss chemical and electrical aspects of communication in the nervous system.

8. Discuss electrical and chemical aspects of intraneuronal and interneuronal communication.

9. Discuss types of neurotransmitters, and then discuss inhibition and excitation in the nervous system.

10.  Discuss paradigms used to study animal behavior (open field test, etc.). 

11.  Discuss methods scientists use to study the nervous system. 

 

Second exam:   

12.  Discuss lateral inhibition, and the concept of receptive fields.

13. Discuss simple and complex cortical cells, and columnar organization of visual cortex.

14.  Discuss doreal and ventral streams in the visual system.

15. Discuss olfaction and gestation.

16. Discuss hierarchical organization in the sensorymotor system, including the effects of learning.

17. Discuss spinal motor circuits:  muscle and relevant receptor organs, and relevant reflex actions. 

 

Third exam: 

18. Discuss the neuroanatomy of object-recognition memory, including relevant research methods.

19. Discuss long-term potentiation and its role in learning and memory.

20. Discuss set-point and non-set-point theories of feeding regulation.

21. Disscuss factors that influence satiety.

22. Discuss androgenic insensitivity syndrome and adrenogenital syndrome.

23. Discuss neural mechanisms that control sexual behavior in males and females.

24. Discuss the control of circadian rhythms, and discuss sleep deprivation.

25. Discuss three brain areas associated with sleep.

26. Discuss pleasure centers in the brain, including the role of dopamine. 

 

Final Exam: 

27. Discuss lateralization in the human brain.

28. Compare the hemispheres of the brain, including a discussion of relevant research evidence as part of your essay.

29. Discuss the "split brain" in humans and nonhumans.

30. Discuss theory and research related to the split brain.

31. Discuss biological aspects of fear and aggression.

32. Discuss stress and its effects.

33. Discuss biology and treatment of schizophrenic illness.

34. Discuss biology and treatment of affective disorders.
