Rainbownotes

Terrence McNally was one of the keynote speakers at the New York State English Council annual conference organized by Victor Jaccarino, '68. "The theme of the conference was celebrating our individual journeys, and to have a playwright who deals with gay themes speak to the entire body was inspiring." Victor would love to hear from anyone in the New York City area suburbs included and would like to offer a gathering at his place or somewhere in the city. "Anyone interested should contact me directly by email (Viceed@aol.com)."

Bruce Shewitz, '73, and his partner Steven Goldring spent two weeks in Israel and Jordan in July. Although it wasn't the coolest weather they'd ever experienced, they were particularly taken with the archaeological sites of Jerash and Petra (site of the temple of the Holy Grail in the third "Indiana Jones" movie). Since their return, Bruce has been shaking down family and friends in order to finance the first compact disk of Good Company, the vocal ensemble in which he sings and of which he is president; the recording, which will appear in April '99, features Christmas music from the 14th through 20th centuries.

Erik Schuckers, '92, writes: "After six months juggling two jobs as a manager with Borders Books & Music and as editorial assistant/staff writer with Pittsburgh's Out newspaper, I've been promoted to Borders' international division." In August, Erik relocated to Brighton, England (site of an abortive attempt to blow up Margaret Thatcher and the entire Conservative government, and home to the third largest gay/lesbian community in the country), to work as a manager and trainer for Borders. Erik has a large flat with a spare room, so alums traveling through the EU are welcome to stay!

J. Scott Van Der Meid, '94, is madly working away at his master's thesis on Asian Americans and study abroad. Anyone knowing Asian American students can point them to his thesis website to fill out an easy questionnaire. In addition to the various cross-cultural workshops he has done in the Boston area, Scott will be presenting in Denver next spring at a national conference of international educators on GLBT issues for students studying overseas.

Joseph McCombs, '95, has been living in San Francisco since Sept. '96 and working for Charles Schwab & Co., "moving millions of dollars in cash and stocks between accounts every day. It's the last thing I ever thought I'd be doing." Currently applying to grad school, Joe hopes to write biographies of artists of the '60s, such as Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, and Jefferson Airplane, focusing on how their music was influenced by the sociology and history of the time. Joe was seen on TV in Sept; he was on VH-1's "Rock and Roll Jeopardy," which proved to be "quite entertaining." Joe would like to send hugs to all, es-pecially to Paula Wurst, John Golden, and Erny Schwarz, who helped him through a rough time in late '95. Joe's e-mail is: joseph.mccombs@schwab.com.

Former staff member Phil Gin is doing well in Los Angeles, CA. He is currently serving California State University, Northridge as the Assistant Director for Marketing and Support Service in the Department of Residential Life and University Conference Services. He will continue his masters program in education this fall. Phil can be reached by e-mail: CCPhilber@earthlink.net.
