Whitewater Falls, Minn. Apr. 2nd/65

Mr. Levi Emery

Dear Husband,-

Your very welcome letter of March 1st was received a few days since. I was glad you had received five dollars of the money I sent you. You have, I hope received five more before now.

It begins to seem as if the war would soon close, still if the fighting closes soon I fear it will be some time before the soldiers will go to their homes. I am looking on the 'bright side' but am of the opinion the 'Conscripts' who were drafted for three years, will stay in the service for more than one year. I was glad to hear you were so fleshy, hope you will be troubled no more with ague. Do you take anything to prevent having it? April 3rd. When I commenced this I hoped to be able to fill the sheet but am feeling so today that I am not able to do it. Baby is not at all playful; so I think he is not well, he is usually so 'full of life' but you will not worry about us, Dear Levi, will you? I presume we will both feel better in a day or two. April 10th. A cold rough week has passed away since I wrote the last, the weather had been unusually cold for April. 'Eddie' and his Mama have been much indisposed, but I am much better today, he is still fretful, coughs some.

Last week's Mail brought four letters written by you in March. I am so glad to hear that you had not used tobacco, but My Dear Levi, you that I love so much, whom I shall teach our Boy to love, I was very wretched when I read that you had been in the habit of drinking ale. Oh Levi, my dear Husband, please don't drink any more. I cannot be happy until you write me that you will not.

Today we received news that Richmond was in our possession and that our forces had taken many thousand of Lee's Army. We had heard before that Richmond was taken ñ I hope it is all true. Twelve men were drafted form this town last week. Only six are wanted but they drew twice as many names as they wanted men this time (Obed's name was eleventh on the list of drafted men) I don't know yet whether he will have to go. I am staying at William's now. Please direct in care of Moses Metcalf instead of Obed after this. I wish Father and Mother could write you, but Mother can never write any more, and Father seldom writes; has only written one to Edwin since he went into the army.

Please excuse poor writing. Write soon to your affectionate wife
Ursula W. Emery.
