Civli War Letters

Richmond. Aug. 4th, /61.

Dear Mother

I hope that you and the rest of the folks are well, and enjoying the smile of our Heavenly Father.

I penned a few lines to you some time since but fearing that you might not have received them I now write again. I am wounded in the left hand and am in the hospital receiving good medical attention. I have a very comfortable bed and plenty to eat and drink. There are two hundred and eighty wounded Federal soldiers, I understand, in this hospital. I occupy a considerable of my time doing what I can for some of them.

I received your letter while at Alexandria but did not answer it then as it was not convenient. I hoe Mother, that you have not worried about me. The God in whom we both trust is able and willing to take care of his children although separated for each other. My mind of times (sic) turns homeward and I feel assured that the loved ones at home remember me though far away and pray that I evince a Christian spirit and live near my savior. My health is good and I hope this will find you all well. Please give my love to all and believe me as ever your loving son,

Levi Emery.

P.S. As to when I will return I can not tell but must rest contented as I am which is much better than I expected. As I am kindly treated as well as are the rest I feel thankful to the Southern people for it.

Respectfully.

Levi Emery.
