Civli War Letters

Pine Bluff, Ark. Aug. 9th, 1864.

Mrs. U. W. Emery

Dear Wife,

I have at last arrived where it seems more like home. We got here night before last. I am assigned to Co. G where the boys of my acquaintance are, but I am acting as hospital nurse. My health is excellent and I believe I am getting fat.

I have great reason for thankfulness. 'Surely my cup runneth over with blessings.'

I sometimes feel solicitous about you but know that He who hears the ravens when they cry' will listen to those who put their trust in Him. We were hindered considerably on our journey from Cairo to Little Rock.

The 'Atlantic' from Cairo to Memphis got disabled so that she worked only one wheel. At the mouth of the White River a monitor undertook to escort the 'Kate Hart', our boat, and the 'Kenton' up the White River. Soon after we started we took the monitor in tow and after awhile she ran aground and after 12 or 15 hours we let the 'Neosha' go back and then made tolerable headway until the rudder broke which detained us again. The White River is narrow and, with the exception of the bars, deep and very crooked. We would get under headway ant then chug against the bank, sometimes on one side and sometimes on the other. We laid at Little Rock nearly a week. We left four men in the general hospital at Little Rock, Frederick Moseman being one of them

I have seen F. Hamlin, D. Leavitt, M. Foster, J. Canfield and others that I knew. They are in Co. G. The hospital buildings here are about thirty rods from the camp.

I have not got any in the buildings where I attend (wait upon the sick) excepting those that come up. The rooms here are pleasant and the food is adapted to the patients. David Leavitt says he thinks that Frank Hamlin did send money by D. Brainerd. I talked with Frank about it and I rather think he did send it. Dave says that Frank has been provident he thinks. Frank has not been well but says he is getting better.

Since I commenced to write I have been ordered to report for duty to the main building and I presume that I will have more to do now, but exercise agrees with me. Please direct to Co. G. Third Minn. Pine Bluff. Ark.
Love to all
Your affectionate husband
Levi Emery.
