Civli War Letters

Highland, July 13th, 1864.

Mr. Levi Emery;

Dear Husband-,

Your letter of the 6th, was received the 9th was glad to hear you were in comfortable quarters. Hope you may be sent where Mr. Knapp and Edwin are.

I received a letter form E. last week, for he was at LaGrange, Tenn. The 10th Regt. are there. Mrs. Knapp rec'd a letter from him (Frank) on Monday; he thought they would be sent to Corinth.

It seemed very lonely after you went away. I almost concluded I couldn't stay here but the gloom wears away, and I think I can be cheerful here, at least shall try to be. I am very well, my limb does not trouble me more than when you were here.

We have had plenty of rain since you left; have water for the pasture for the cattle, have not needed any drawn to use yet. I rise nearly an hour earlier than I have been in the habit of doing. Ought I not to be ashamed that I had Levi wait upon me so much? I appreciate all your kindness to my, my husband. We will hope you will return when three years are passed. I do not look upon this war as very near its close, although near its close to many poor fellow. May God speed your safe return, so shall be my daily prayer for you. Be careful of your health, don't needlessly expose yourself.

I don't think you will, dear Levi. I hope though widely separated, our prayer may ascend together, to Him, 'Who doeth all things well', for His blessing upon all we do. You will be first in my thoughts at morn, the last at night.

Grace says, 'Evi's gone to fight the Rebels.' I guess she seems to understand that you will not come back at present.

Father came up Friday. Mother went home with him, the next day. I will write to our Mother in Wisconsin soon. Hope you will if you haven't yet. A letter came for you last week from G.S. Cole. He was in Camp near Carrolton, La. That was where his letter was dated. Did not give any P.O. Address. I will send you his letter if you wish.

Edwin sent his respects to you. I hope you will meet him when you go down south. We direct to him now to Co. B 7th Minn. Inft. 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 16th Army Corps, Memphis, Tenn.

Write me as often as you can, Levi. You know your letters will be anxiously looked for. I will try to write short letters. I will do the best I can with things here, and you will continue in good spirits will you not? Write soon to your affectionate wife

Ursula Emery.
