Civli War Letters

Pine Bluff. Oct 2nd, 1864.

Mrs. Urslua W. Emery

Dear Wife,

I received a letter form C.G. Dawley date Sept. 5th stating that you were a mother, and that you were doing well. I have been feeling quite anxious about you, and still fear that you are not very as Aug. 15th was the last letter that I received from you. But still it is a great relief receiving Mr. Dawley's letter and finding that you are doing well. I hope, Ursula, that you will have the very best of care. As I wait on the sick soldiers I think of you and pray that some kind hand may minister to your wants. We cannot depend on the mail here regularly. It is two weeks I believe, since the last mail before this. I write in haste for some think that the boat will leave today and it might lie here two weeks perhaps. I mean to write every mail if well. I am well. I have had a tough of fever but only for a short time. I also had two shakes, but now I feel well and am very hearty. The ague is very common here. I hope soon that the weather is rather cooler that the health of the Regt. will improve. If the boat goes out today I probably will not get time to answer Mr. Dawley's letter. If I do not, if you should see him, please tell him to excuse me as my wife has first claim. Our chances here are good, as we can get shirts washed for ten cents apiece and pants for ten cents. I often think how Ursula likes me to look neat and try to improve by her example. Well, Ursula do as you think best in regard to where to make your home, only take care of yourself and do not deny yourself any luxury that you need for your happiness. We have not been paid. Don't know when we will be. I have plenty of change though.

Let us put our entire trust in our Savior and all will be well. He can preserve us through far separated, and if He seems fit to allow us to meet to enjoy each other's society. I hope that you will soon be able to write. Kiss the boy for me. I hope that his life will be spared and that he may make a better man than his father. *

Please excuse scrawls, as I have written fast.
From your affectionate husband
Levi Emery.

*('As good a man as his father,' would have been good enough. He lived to be 21 years old. Always good and kind throughout his life.)
