PLUGS
Plugs are an easy way to propagate plants.Plugs or liners are produced by specialty growers who start the plants then ship then out to be finished off by the grower. Plugs come in a variety of different sizes depending on the plant materiel and the time the grower wants to spend finishing them off. A 512 tray would have 512 plants ready to be placed in cell packs or pots and grown on.These plants would be very small and take the longest time maybe 6 to 8 weeks. A 288 tray would have larger plants and would take maybe only 4 weeks to finish off. A 70 tray is usally used for perrienials or larger landscape plants that will be grown on for the next years sale. There are several good reasons to buy plants as plugs. First the plugs are already to be placed in to cell packs or pots and save a lot of time and labor. Second overhead costs are reduced because the plants do not have to be in a heated greenhouse for as long a period. In the case of a crop failure plugs could supplement a production shortage.
