The Glen Minor team have probably been the most successful team in the club this year. They were managed by rookies Gary Mc Daid (Physical Education Teacher at St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny) and Barry Canning (Student at Letterkenny Institute of Technology studying Computers). At the time of the yearbook going to be published they had won the Division 3 Minor Championship for the third year in the row, had won the Northern Minor Division 2 League, were in the Co. League Division 2 Semi-Final, and were unbeaten all season in all competitions.
First game of the Championship was away to Muff. The Glen came away with a 4:10 to 1:5 victory, with Darren Mc Ginley getting 2:01. In the return leg the Glen were hot favourites after their emphatic victory in the first leg. However this game proved to a lot tighter, with Muff fielding a much stronger side. Glen managed to win the game 1:08 to 1:05, after trailing by a point in the second half, with good performances coming from Christopher Mc Fadden and Ciaran Molloy. In the semi-final of the championship the lads faced Na Róssa in Castlefinn and they came away with a comfortable victory of 2:21 to 1:01, with full forward Kieran Bonner scoring a remarkable 2:12. In the final the Glen faced local rivals Milford, and came away with a one point victory, with excellent performances coming from captain John Bernard Mc Geehan and full forward Kieran Bonner, both players being tipped by local Gaelic Games reporter Tom Comack for success at County level. | |
The Glen’s first game of the season was home to Milford in the Northern Division 2 League way back on the 17th May. The boys were 13 points down with 15 minutes to go, and looked dead and buried, but somehow pulled the game back point by point, with captain John Bernard Mc Geehan scoring the winning point with a 45metre free in the last kick of the game. The management knew that after this display that this team had something special, that “never say die attitude” which all good successful teams have. From that game on everyone believed in the team that they could win every game, after such an awesome performance. The next game in the Northern League was away to the old enemy Termon. In an evenly contested match with a lot of pride at stake the Glen recorded a single point victory, in a score line of 1:10 to 1:09 in the Burn Road, with good performances coming from John Bernard Mc Geehan and Kieran Bonner. The Glen was then on their travels again when they visited Robert Emmets, Castlefinn. In a very close first half the Glen lead by a goal, however a rise in tempo by the lads saw them run out winners on a final score line of 2:10 to 0:07, with the Glen defence being on top in the second half with Robert Emmets managing only a single point. In the final game of the group stage in the Northern League, the Glen was home to Letterkenny Gaels. After trailing by 8 points at half time, again the Glen showed that they were the “come back kings” when they upped their performance by a few gears in the second half to win by 2 points in atrocious conditions, leaving the full time score of 1:13 to 2:08. The lads finished top of the Northern League, unbeaten with maximum points being taken from all their games. Termon and Milford finished joint second level on points, with Termon winning a play-off between the teams to win the right to play the Glen in the Northern League Division 2 Final. This game was played in Dunfanaghy in windy conditions. The Glen played with the wind in the first half and led 0:03 to 0:02 at half time. In the second half the lads gave every last drop of energy they had in their body’s when playing into the wind and ran out winners 0:09 to 0:04 in a tough hard hitting physical match. Best for Glenswilly were Kieran Bonner and the Mc Fadden brothers, Christopher and Gary. This completed the double for the boys and it was even sweeter coming against our archrivals!
In the Co. Division 2 League, the Glen played Naomh Mhúire in the quarterfinal and ran out convincing winners on a score line of 6:10 to 2:03. Having got a bye against Na Rossa in the semi-final. They now await St Nauls in the final, . The team are aiming to complete their own little bit of History by winning the Co. League Division 2 League title, thus completing the treble, which would be a first for any team in the club!

Division 2 League Final (Glen Minors Complete the Treble)
Glenswilly 2-9    St Nauls 2-5
On Sunday last the 15th December the Glenswilly Minor team completed their own little bit of history when they became the first team within the club to win three separate competitions in one season. On the day they defeated St. Nauls to win the County League, adding to their Northern League and County Championship titles already won this season.
The game was played in good conditions in Fintra, Killybegs with the pitch being in excellent condition, which made for a great game of football. Glenswilly stormed into a 1-02 to 0-01 lead with Kieran Bonner converting two frees and an opportunist goal from Gary Mc Fadden. St. Nauls were quick to hit back with two goals, the first coming after a mistake in the Glen goal area and a very good individual well taken second goal. They added a further point from play, before Glen replied with two points one from Kieran Bonner and one from captain John Bernard Mc Geehan. St. Nauls hit back with a further score from play before Darren Mc Ginley got the final point before the half drew to a close, leaving the half-time score of St. Nauls 2-03 Glenswilly 1-05.

After St. Nauls dominating the stages in the first half, it was the turn of the boys from the Glen to turn it on in the second half. Kieran Bonner added a further three points, two frees and one from play leaving him with a personal tally of six points (4f) and the Glen leading by two points. St. Nauls failed to score from the 21st minute until 37th minute again before they added tow quick points to level the sides once again. John Bernard Mc Geehan put the Glen back in front with a fine score form play to put the Glen up by one again. The Glen defence were under severe pressure for the last ten minutes with St. Nauls missing three score able frees. Glen corner back Paddy Mc Connell had the task of marking Co. star Stephen Griffin, and he didn’t give the Mount Charles man an easy or productive game, with his steady tackling and close defending throughout the match. Glen goalkeeper Mark Glackin denied St. Nauls a goal with a wonderful double save late in the game. Captain John Bernard Mc Geehan worked tirelessly in his unfamiliar position in midfield, bringing the ball out on the defence on numerous occasions, thus helping to relieve the pressure on the Glen defence. In injury team Martin Gallagher won a free in his own half and played the ball to John Bernard Mc Geehan, who in turn fed Darren Mc Ginley, who produced a great flick over the St. Nauls full back into the hands of the on running Gary Mc Fadden who rallied through to send a rocket into the top corner of the St. Nauls net. This proved to be the decisive and final score of the game, leaving the final score of Glenswilly 2-09 St. Nauls 2-05. The scoreline does not exactly tell the true story, as it was a much closer game with both teams playing end-to-end stuff and trading scores throughout the game. Minor board secretary and St. Nauls women Kathleen Campbell presented the Glenswilly captain John Bernard Mc Geehan with the trophy after the game.
On the day the best for Glenswilly were two-goal hero Gary Mc Fadden, Kieran Bonner with a 100% record from frees, captain John Bernard Mc Geehan, and defenders Paddy Mc Connell and Christopher Mc Fadden.
