Proclamation 1017 and the University of the Philippines

Following Gloria-Macapagal Arroyo's rather hasty and uncalled-for declaration of state of emergency, the UP community once again displayed its (in)famous show of reseliency and strength against repressive measures taken by the government. Rallies, cultural shows and demonstrations, forums, and a general feeling of militancy and activism surrounded the Diliman campus as various groups assembled almost everyday to denounce GMA's actions.

Several UP contingencies joined in the violently-disperesed EDSA I commemoration last February 24, despite severe warnings of warrantless arrests and threats at an impeding martial law. The stand-off by the marines that Sunday illicited an immediate reaction from UP where a rally was held at the Quezon Hall, with the clear message for President Arroyo to step down being sounded.

The Monday immediately following the declaration of 1017, the UP-CMC community met to discuss measures at keeping an open flow of communication and released a statement approved by the CMC community. The following day was Diliman Republic's way of expressing dissent over GMA's 1017, as UP professors declared a faculty walk out and announced that the University is an emergency-free campus.
