Two Hands ClappingNow we must not leave the concept that dualism has no merit in the scheme of things. It has merit in philosophical thought. But the merit is not in the nature of good and evil; of positive versus negative; of powers of light versus powers of darkness. The nature of the truth in the concept of dualism is more in the idea of two hands clapping. Try to imagine the sound of one hand clapping. Now bring in the idea of the second hand. How much better indeed! Now you have the idea of the truth, in the very essence of life, that should rightfully be thought of as dualism. The ideas in the Yin and Yang, developed over long centuries in the philosophies of ancient Chinese cultures, are closer to the true nature of dualism than many others. Here we see the Yin and Yang supporting each other. The warm, rich darkness of the night supports and supplements the activity of the light and the struggle of the day. The quiet, resting mind in meditation brings fresh energy to the active mind of thought and reason. Cold and heat flow together to give the warm balm of healing to all life. Also in the nature of the male and female, in its deeper meanings, we will find this supporting nature of the two halves of life. In conclusion, we want to leave the reader with the idea of dualism existing in nature and in life as the two halves that complete and supplement each other rather than a concept of two opposing forces in nature. To think of life as flowing from two sources in opposition to each other, in conflict with each other, is not in harmony with the true nature of consciousness. The old teachings of the Hebrew Jehovah versus Satan, or the Christian God versus the devil are misunderstandings in the teachings as often presented. We need much more time and material to separate the wheat from the chaff, the true kernel from the husks in those grand old religions. Some day we may work out a schedule by which we can enter into that material. One final comment for our busy writer here this morning. He has lurking around in his head an idea we need to write to very briefly. That is the nature of the halves of the High-soul. Yes indeed, it is true that there are various and supporting elements in the nature of the High-soul that might be thought of as the male and female halves of the soul, or the Yin and Yang of the soul, the Night and Day of the soul. We will give more material on the nature and reasons for this soon. Nothing in all of life creates greater beauty than the halves of a mind in harmony, in balance, in equilibrium, and at rest with its own inner being. |
