                                              Greetings from the president

many changes have taken place regarding the effort to establish a sound breedingprogramm for the Deutsch Langhaar since our last newsletter was published.

We have gone through a restructuring in several areas. The most significant being registration and testing.

The objectives that we originally sought, sound and competant gun dogs for hunters, have not changed only the methods for achieving them is a little different.
Why did we change ? You will recall that under the old system we did our registrations and tested with several different organizations. The problem with this was that it did not ensure that quality would be maintained in the breeding process.
The tests were not equivalent to the European tests and there were no consequences for breeders who did not follow good breeding practices.
This coupled with the fact that the breeders in European did not want to send dogs to an area that did not have the same testing system that they used. These breeders did not
want to waste their efforts by losing some of the few pups they produce each year from their already small gene pool.
The choice was clear if we wanted to good Deutsch Langhaar and establish the breed
here we needed to follow the well proven European system.
We are fortunate to now have several organizations that provide tests that are recognize in Europe. The registrations can now also be done in Germany which is
another great advantage.
The future looks good for the DL in North America. We now have an opportunity to
move ahead with establishing what we all consider to be the best gun dog breed.
Good Hunting
