  • How to track with the German Longhaired Hunting Dog

  •

German Longhaired Hunting Dogs are famous tracking dogs which are mentioned in many stories in their homeland.

The dog is equipped with a special collar and a long leash called "Schweisriemen". The German Longhair will guides the hunter on the leash to the downded game.

The following requirements are demanded of these dogs:

  • Tracking for a distance of 1000 m of a scent spur which is 24 hours old

  •
  • Tracking for a distance of 1000 m of a

  • scent spur which is 40 hours old

  • Bringselverweiser

  •

When the tracking terrain becomes too rough to go through for the hunter, the German Longhair can be trained in the following way:

The dog is equipped with a special collar which is a piece of leather on a rubber band. He tracks wounded game and finds it in the rough and retrieves is. In the event the game animal is too large to retrieve, the dog comes back with the special leather collar piece in his mouth.  He then guides the hunter to the downded game.

  • Totverbeller and Totverweiser

  •

Sometimes the dog will be trained to stay with the dead game and call his handler trough steady barking.
