We like to travel.  We think traveling expands the mind, stimulates the mind, and is good for the soul.

Well I have to say I may have gotten my traveling genes because I am a first-generation American.  My father was born in Austria and I was there when I was 17 for a month.  Who else but me had grandparents named Hansel and Gretel? (yea, really).  As we all know, the Viennese are some of the most awesome pastry bakers in the world.  So, with that in mind, I offer a recipe for Vanille Kipferl, or Almond Crescents.  I have made many  many cookie recipes, but this one is my favorite.  It is a recipe handed down from my Aunt Helga, and before her, her mother and my grancmother, the admirable and resourceful  Gretel Leiner Fischer.
This is the snorkeling inlet at Xcaret, an ecological park south of Cancun. This place is definitely worth the $80 price tag... there are underground rivers to snorkel in, Mayan ruins, secluded beaches,  exotic palm-lined hiking trails, and other attractions.
(left) Seneca Rocks,  West Virigina, May 2001-- There was an unreasonable amount of rain there this time but at least we were rewarded with a double rainbow. The fainter one is to the left of the rocks.  The parks service has replaced the earlier riverside campground with a campground called Seneca Shadows. Each campsite at the group site has an amazing view of the rocks. The campground is a short little walk down a hill path to Yokems..where you can eat, get supplies, or hang out.

In December 1999 we took a trip out to San Francisco, California to visit a friend.  We took some of the trails at Muir Woods, a National Park. The Redwoods were only part of the magic of these woods,  which are almost a micro-environment.  The ferns and moss were also a part of the cool rain forest flora, and the noteable bird there was the Varied Thrush as well as the neat Pileated Woodpecker (below)
