The Reunion Of Souls

By Alison

D/C: I don't own anything except the plot and Vicki, although she's not really a main character, so I'll trade her in for Draco. JK Rowling, Scholastic, and people who are luckier than me own them. Sarah McLachlan owns the song quote of one of my favorite songs at the bottom.

~*~*~

Hermione Granger was fussing with her hair, trying to get it to stay put. It was one of those bad hair days that she got less frequently than when she was a child, but still came about every couple months.

"Why today?" she grumbled to herself. "Why the day of our reunion?"

Harry Potter came gliding in. "We're going to be late."

"It only takes a second to get to the train station, Harry, I'll be ready in a minute." He came up from behind her and put his arms around her waist.

"You're beautiful," he told her, kissing her shoulders. Hermione giggled and pushed him out of the way.

"You're not helping," she said. She finally got it tamed, and she and Harry apparated to King's Cross Station.

In Platform 9 ¾, there was a huge banner, flickering a million different colors: "Welcome Hogwarts 25th Anniversary Graduates!"

Hermione and Harry got into their usual car on the Hogwarts Express, and they were soon joined by Ron and Vicki Weasley. Ron and Vicki were on the same Quidditch team, the Chudley Cannons, and had found love at first sight.

They greeted each other and spent the whole train ride catching up on old stories. When they finally got to Hogwarts, it was just as they had remembered from their seventh year. It looked the same as ever, except for the Astronomy Tower. Voldemort had come in there on one fateful day and nearly defeated them. But Harry, along with the help of Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore, and McGonagall, managed to help Voldemort meet his final demise.

After that, the celebrations lasted for weeks. Harry, Hermione, and Ron were treated as heroes, and they didn't seem to mind a bit, even though they would have much rather gotten some sleep than sign even more autographs.

They got out and took the memorable flight across the lake to get to Hogwarts. Everyone noticed with some remorse that Hagrid wasn't there to guide them. He and Madame Maxine had been killed in a battle between the giant community and Voldemort. There were two very large graves by Hagrid's hut, and they say that if you listen, you can still hear Fang howling for Hagrid.

Everyone breathed a sigh of enchantment as they entered the Great Hall. After not seeing it for twenty-five years, everyone had missed it. They all took a seat, this time not mattering which table they sat at. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Vicki took a seat near each other and were soon joined by Neville and Parvati Longbottom, Lavender and Seamus Finnigan, and Dean Thomas, who everyone assured would find love soon, although he seemed quite happy living life as a bachelor.

Dumbledore went up to the front of the room. "Greetings, former students of Hogwarts! Welcome back to Hogwarts! I won't keep you from your festivities, so eat and enjoy!" The students complied and went on to eat a feast similar to that which they ate on so many first days of school. Or was it really that many?

The Gryffindor got caught up with each other and where everyone else was in their lives. After the feast was over and everyone was feeling a little bit sleepy, Dumbledore put on some music and they were almost instantly woken up again. The tables were once again thrown aside to the side of the room and everyone mingled out into the crowd, chattering and hugging long lost friends.

"Who's that fellow over there?" asked Vicki, pointing to a blond-haired man over by the punch bowl who looked depressed to be there.

"Draco Malfoy," said Ron. "Not surprised he doesn't have a wife yet. Or at least one that's stayed with him this long."

Hermione looked at him and froze. She still hadn't forgotten about their brief "fling" back in their sixth year…

*FLASHBACK*

They were lying next to each other on a couch in an empty classroom. Their hands were entwined, and they were both content to stay there for the rest of their lives.

"We can't go on like this, Hermione," said Draco.

"I know," she whispered. She noticed his hands were growing more sweaty.

"If my father finds out…"

"I know," she repeated. "Maybe we should spend some time apart. Just until Voldemort's defeated. Then we can finally be together forever…"

Draco had been transferred to Durmstrang a couple weeks later. He claimed that his father had made him, but Hermione knew it was because of her, because of the way she was born, and why they knew they couldn't be together.

She had never seen him again after he transferred…

*END FLASHBACK*

…until that night.

"Lousy git," Harry put in. He put his arms around Hermione and she flinched. "Hermione, are you all right?" he asked.

"I'm fine," she said, wiggling out of his grasp. She looked back at Draco and was met with cold eyes. "I'm just going to go talk with some old friends."

She hurried away from them and went over to Draco. "Hi," she said, helping herself to some punch.

"Are we going to talk, or is it just going to be left at that?" he asked.

Hermione took a sip, all the while not taking her eyes off of him, then said, "Let's find an empty classroom."

It didn't take them long to find the Transfiguration room where they had so many memories together there. Hermione sat down.

Draco just stood there for a second, then started. "Potter? You married Potter? I mean, was he the best you could find at the time or something?"

"He loves me, and I…" she trailed off.

"Do you love him?" he asked. "You can tell me, Hermione, obviously me loving you wasn't enough. You needed some big Quidditch star, not some pretty-boy spoiled brat. Of course," he said, an odd sort of smile crawling up on him. "Potter beat me at everything. He had everything I couldn't have. Prize Seeker, Head Boy, and now he really has defeated me. He got you."

"He didn't get me," said Hermione indignantly.

"Whatever. He just wanted to make my life miserable." He started yelling. "Are you happy now, Potter?! You finally got what you wanted!"

"I'm with Harry now," said Hermione, and she was almost telling herself this more than Draco. "I'm happy." She closed her eyes.

"How long before you break his heart? A week? A month? Or even as long as a fucking year?" he said, drawing his face close to hers.

"Please stop," she said, refusing to open her eyes.

"I'll bet you don't say that to him," he said, getting some of that old school-boy sneer back in his voice.

"Stop…"

"Come on, Potter? Was he the absolute best…"

"Draco." She opened her eyes and met his. "Please stop."

He looked into her eyes and all those feelings came rushing at him. "Hermione…I'm sorry…" He kneeled down and hugged her knees. She bent down over him and lay her head on his back and stroked his hair. After a moment, he added in a whisper, "But why didn't you wait for me?"

Hermione didn't answer. She couldn't. And the silence that grew between them that night lasted for the rest of their lives, as they never spoke again.

And I have the sense to recognize that I don't know how to let you go---Sarah McLachlan, "Do What I Have To Do."
