POLLUTION
CFCs(chlorofluorocarbons), developed in the early 1930s were used in a variety of commercial and household applications such as refrigerators, spray paint, electronic cleaning solvents, and blowing agents for many years. Because of our growing use of CFCs we depleted our ozone and now it is causing many problems for us.Just recently we have phased out the production of CFCs. Corporations have decided to take a step up and change the production of thier products.Despite this rapid phaseout, ozone levels are expected to be the lowest in several decades due to the long life span of CFCs.Granted we have made a good step for our future we have a long way to go.This video released by the BBC on Feb 25, 2000describes the current situation.

Although we have mad a good step in the CFC department we still have many other problems to solve. One of the leading pollutants now is carbon dioxid or (CO2).As shown in the graph below, the amount of CO2 is raipldy growing.

Where might you ask is it coming from? Well, the leading cause of CO2 emissions is from our cars.In fact our cars are responsible for one third of the emisions. What happens is, our cars need oil.Oil is a no-renewable fule and durring the burrining of the oil, CO2 is realeased. Because nature can not make CO2 back into oil efficiently, more and more CO2 is being realeased into the air each second. In fact, one gallon of gassoline weighs about 6.5 pounds before it is burned and weighs about 20 pounds after. This is because oxygen combines with the carbon to form CO2 to making it much heavier. Take a look at the diagram below!
These stunning facts all lead to one sign, global warming!Global warming is is best described through the greenhouse effect. This happens when the sun heats the earth’s surface. By heating the surface, the earth radiates some of the energy back into space. Greenhouse gases like water vapor and carbon dioxide trap some of the outgoing energy, retaining heat like the glass panels of a greenhouse. WIhtout this, the earth would be much cooler and we could not live here. The only problem is that when we have excess gasses, they cause the earth to trap to much heat! This concept is described by the figure below.
