Testing the Water
The 5th grade students in Mrs. Anderson's class walked to Marquette
Park from Randolph School in Chicago Illinois. GLOBE Teacher Mr. Lopatka had taken these students to test the water when they were in 4th grade. Last year they tested the temperature and PH of the water. They sent the data to GLOBE scientists by way of the internet.
This year, they not only tested the PH and temperature but they tested the turbidity of the
water with turbidity tubes that they made using plastic tubes. You can find out how to
make a Turbidity Tube from the GLOBE Water Transparency site

We recorded our GPS location so that GLOBE scientists could locate the water site from LANDSAT satellite images. GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a hand-held device that receives timing signals from satellites 20,200 kilometers in space to measure our latitude and longitude with sufficient accuracy that we can pick out our school or home in a satellite image. When we submit our location measurement, we
help participating GLOBE scientists and students geographically relate all of our GLOBE
measurements.
In the picture at the right, you see Andrea collecting a water sample from the Marquette
Park lagoon. Michael, Shaundra and Joseph get ready to find the PH and temperature of
the sample.

In the picture above, Kendall pours some of the pond water into the turbidity tube
as Darrius, Michael, Lacresha and Jasmie offer advice.

In the picture on the right, Kendall checks to see how transparent the water is. DeAndre and Sidney will measure the height of the water column when the bottom of the tube is no longer visible.
In the picture at the left, this group of students is recording the cloud cover and cloud types that are visible. The GLOBE Cloud Chart comes in handy here.

Here you see GLOBE Teacher Mr. Greg Lopatka checking Joseph's Student Data recording sheet, as Darrius looks on.
