Our first stop was in Stratford, Ontario. I had never heard of Stratford but as I walked
in to the big boss's office to say my farewells, he had a copy of the Stratford Festival
tourist guide sitting on his desk. He gave it to me (I left on good terms) and off we ventured.
We stayed in London, ON the first night and drove to Stratford on Sunday.
We discovered from this guide that the plays were not shown on Mondays.
The guide also noted that the main theater there is considered the second
greatest English language theater in the world. Who'd have thought it?
Our choices for the first play to see were limited to just a few. We didn't really
care for the Oscar Wilde tributes and Glenda didn't want me to watch Hamlet. She
says it makes me too depressed. So we went to Hamlet. (Hehehe).
Wow! I have seen a couple of different versions of Hamlet performed and without
a doubt, this is the best I have ever seen. The man who played Hamlet did
an outstanding job. I was very impressed.
The next day being a day when the plays were all closed, we went on to
Niagara Falls (we'll come back to that). We came back to Stratford on Tuesday
to partake of more live entertainment.
We chose to see a few thousand year-old play by Euripedes called Medea.
It's about the wife of Jason (of the Argonauts fame. Jason decides to leave
her for the King's daughter and she decides to get revenge in any way possible.
In the end, she hates him more than she loves her own sons and murders them
to break his heart.
Again, Wow! The actress did a phenomenal job. Quite an impressive performance.
We had time for one final performance and chose Tartuffe. We felt it was an OK play
but better suited I think to 18th century French contemporaries than to today.
For our final night there, we stayed at a Bed and Breakfast for the first time.
It was much friendlier and cozy than a hotel but Glenda didn't like the
noise outside the windows. I was fine sleeping through the sounds of the Canadian outdoors.
