BLAKENEY FAMILY CEMETERY

In 1946,  Mr. & Mrs. Stephen Harley Laney of Pageland, SC , descendants of Capt. John Blakeney donated an acre of  land to their daughter, Mrs. Hazel H. Davis on which the Blakeney Cemetery was located. Mrs. Davis, local regent of the John Foster Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution deeded the land to the John Foster Chapter of the DAR. The Chapter agreed to sponsor a program and act as custodian and guardian of funds raised by descendants of the Blakeney Family  and designated the Blakeney Memorial Fund.
Inscription on the monument place at the grave of Capt. John Blakeney reads as follow:

Capt. John Blakeney
Pioneer-Patriot-Churchman-Statesman
Colonial and Revolutionary
Soldier Born at Mount Blakeney, Limerick, Ireland

Earliest known record of John Blakeney in America is found in Granville county, N.C., where he witnessed will of John Lynch, August 31, 1753. it is thought that he came to the Old Cheraws about 1760, or soon afterward.
