Grandma's Quilts
photos ~ page five
A word about sampler quilts...I tried for years to get Grandma to make me a quilt. When Marc and I got married she asked what I wanted for our wedding in 1984. Of course I said a quilt. But I couldn't decide on which pattern I wanted--there were too many great ones. So I picked out 12 and she made me a sampler quilt. When the women at the Newton Methodist Church (Newton, Kansas) quilted it, they quilted each square differently to match that square's pattern. It's very special. Grandma later went on to make my sister Kathy, and all my cousins (Sandy, Roxie, Mike & Mark) sampler quilts. Sandy's is below, Roxie's on page 6.
NOTE: My quilt was quilted by the women at NMC, but all the other sampler quilts my grandmother made were quilted by her younger sister, Julia Fagg. I'm a bit jealous all my cousins got quilts Auntie (our nickname for Julia) quilted!
Unfortunately, my quilt is in storage as my husband and I live overseas...someday I'll put a picture up. Whenever we live in the US, rest assured that our sampler quilt is on our bed all the time--so we think of Grandma often and the hard work she put into this unusual quilt!
Pictures of Sandy's sampler quilt from 1992, with a lovely model...
My husband, Marc Dyer, was taking lots of photos that afternoon last July (2001), as I'd asked everyone to bring any quilts to Grandma's house for photographing. Amy, our niece, decided it was time to get Marc's attention, as Marc is usually her special friend. I think they went outside to play shortly after this photo was taken! When Amy's around, I'm #2 priority!
This is a cross-stitched quilt. My great-aunt Clara Swank made it for my Aunt Joan Brown in the 1980s. The white squares are decorated with quilting, the colored squares with cross-stitching on the stars.
This was given to my sister Kathy Dennis in 1995. It was made in New Mexico, probably, but we don't know by whom. The pieces are all rectangles, and it's called a brick pattern, but the unusual color layout is what makes this simple quilt so special. It's really eye-catching. Machine quilted.
